pretty sure umbra cape is either as good, or better than shadow mantle. even if it were slightly better, consistency > random luck. grats though.
Thanks. It's much more versatile than Umbra, can use it on all my jobs Smiley: grin.

well, wiki says 5~10% proc rate on mantle. if it's 5%, then umbra is always better, and either way it's better at night.

First I went after Brass Borer and Iriz, who both turned out to be a joke.

Screenshot

Screenshot

Then failed a Gration. Somehow I bumped a convert macro while flipping through macro books just as Stoneskin dropped and my shadows were down.

Then failed another Gration at 6% because I took so long he ran out of MP and pretty much plowed me.

Then Finally on the 3rd attempt, I nuked whenever I could and kept Bio II and Poison II up and skipped Slow II as I found it makes little to no difference in getting out of range of Thundaga III.

Screenshot

Finally, I need some info on a couple tier 1 ZNM solos.

Cheese Hoarder

Because I gotta farm another Iriz pop now and:

Chigre

Because I think I'd like that ring.

Thanks =)

Finally got Utsusemi: Ni after years of having an incomplete subjob! With my Warlock Chapeau, Duelist's Tabard, and... well, nothing else at the moment, it's time I learned how to use it in solo situations.

Any suggestions? Is Gration a good place to start? Or should I get a feel for it against normal mobs first and work on getting some more haste gear instead?

not if you want any kind of a challenge. bune/ungur are both good choices. they're pretty easy, but not impossible to die to like gration is.

His intimidation isn't something people run across every day. It does take some practice and getting used to.

I'm not looking for challenge currently, I'm looking for something to break the ice with. I've played with shadows(Ichi only) before against Ose, but I get the feeling a sleep-nuke strategy against a cat most jobs can solo anyway doesn't count.

And anyway, are you sure I have everything I need for Bune? Or are you talking about the whole Bind-it-and-step-two-paces-back version, opposed to the ceremonial enspell version?

I seem to recall you having difficulty with Gration before. How quickly we forget that we were all new at things once, hmm?

I've had some pretty ******** moments on Gration before, some of which involved my untimely death:

Gration starts casting Enthunder
I start casting Blizzard III
It runs up to me and melees off 1 shadow
My Stoneskin conveniently times up and wears off
My nuke fires
Gration uses a 3-shadow Grand Slam
Since I only have 2 shadows I take 1k damage

Also been hit by Thundaga a few times due to some mob getting in my way of my running, or having to adjust my course to move out of the mob's way >_>

maybe, but intimidates won't kill you.

well i certainly wasn't so familiar with it's pathing, that i knew exactly where to stand to force it to go a certain direction, like i can now. nor was i able to avoid thundaga as easily as i can now (by never getting so close that i wouldn't be able to outrun it, except sometimes right after it casts) and i've also certainly died to it several times before, but i also wouldn't call that difficulty. doing poorly doesn't always indicate difficulty. bad luck, lack of focus, poor gear/merits, lack of experience, miss-timing, hitting the wrong macro, extreme lag, as well as lack of skill can all have the same end result.

case in point:
Quote:
I've had some pretty bullsh*t moments on Gration before, some of which involved my untimely death:

Gration starts casting Enthunder
I start casting Blizzard III
It runs up to me and melees off 1 shadow

My nuke fires
Gration uses a 3-shadow Grand Slam

there are multiple things you could have done to survive this. first, you could have started nuking sooner/farther away so you didn't get hit in the first place, leaving you 3 shadows to absorb grand slam. second you could have recasted stoneskin before it wore of. third, you could have switch to -dmg% gear sooner so grand slam didn't 1shot you. fourth, you could use more +hp gear/merits so you didn't get 1shotted by grand slam. fifth, you could have interrupted your nuke when you got hit, or realized you were about to get hit (maybe, not always possible).

i can easily avoid such a situation every time, without fail. the fact that you can't/couldn't doesn't really say anything/much about you. just because you died to it doesn't mean you have difficulty killing it.

by challenge i didn't necessarily mean they're hard. you want to start off easy, but there's also no point testing your skills against something that's too easy. i mean, if you just want something easy, you could always go for a wild rabbit Smiley: tongue

and yes, i was referring to bind kiting. not only is bind kiting much easier, but as you start soloing harder mobs, you'll probably find that a large portion of harder solos require a bind kite strategy. also, bind kiting is far less reliant on gear/merits than straight tanking the entire fight, giving another advantage for starters.

Well if I wanted to go on a suicide run, sure.

In any event, I guess I might give Bune a shot a bit later on if I ever get his ToD or find him up... My gear and merits aren't epic yet, so I don't think I could go up optimistically. I'm told I could try some sky NMs first... so maybe I'll do that.

Thanks for the ideas, in any event

No, really.. if you die because of the intimidate that's just poor playing. Spell got intimidated? Too bad, keep moving and wait for your next chance. Dying on gration really is hard. As long as you keep moving and don't sit there trying to cast bio II 5 times from the same spot, you're fine.

From my own experiences, Bune is easier than Zipacna or Faust. Bune almost never resists Bind, even without incredible gear. He's also easy to just straight tank with slow II on when he does resist a bind. On top of all this, he doesn't even have a lot of HP. He's pretty much a perfect beginning solo. Guivre is the same concept as Ungur/Bune, but a little bit tougher.
