Amarok solo advice pleaseFollow

Hello.

Having alot of trouble soloing Amarok, i simply don't think i am going about it the right way and would love some advice on soloing him please.

The questions i have are, ive read about 'tanking on the paw' but i dont seem to understand what that means, is it Amaroks left paw, or the left paw as you face him (his right paw) and also where should i face whilst standing on this left paw... side on looking at his neck? full face on looking straight down him? And i noticed he moves his paw too... what about that?

My other problem was lava spit... hit me for 2.5k... what can i do about that please?

Any help or advice would be hugely appreciated.

Thankyou

Tanking on the paw just means standing on one of his two front paws, since, like Wyrm breath attacks, he has Sulfurous Breath, which is frontal cone. If you attack him standing on one of his front paws, it'll lower the damage you take from that attack. If you've ever fought a Wyrm before, then you know the concept, but if you haven't before, here's an idea of it. I whipped this together real quick to give you an idea of where you want to stand, with either position being shown.

Screenshot

You basically want to be on one of his two front paws, close enough so that he won't turn towards you when he goes to attack you, and instead strikes at you with the paw you're standing on, or biting at you with the head closest to your position.

For Lava Spit, really your only way of handling it is to have a good -MDT set, some Fire resistance, and/or Shell. Did he happen to do his howling animation before he did that Lava Spit? From what I've seen, his howl will act as a sort of Boost for the magic spell or TP move he does after it. It doesn't affect Addle or Ululation, but if it's a damaging attack, it'll do far more damage than it would normally, like it's an Attack/Magic Attack boost. If that's the case, once you see him howl, just prepare yourself for something right after. He'll always do a TP move or a spell right after the howl (which might end up being another howl), so if you swap over to -MDT/DT gear right as he finishes his howl, you might have a better chance to survive it.

I assume you mean without brew. Aegis pld/rdm can solo Orthrus pretty easily, but on dnc it'd be a lot harder. He dishes out a ton of magic damage (spells + gates of hades/acheron flame, acheron he can do twice in a row too). And he has blaze spikes up near constantly. :/ With excellent mdt- set and fire resistance atma and a bunch of meds maybe.

Ok thankyou.

Don't have aegis

Regarding brew, does Orthrus recover any HP if you WS at the 'wrong' time? or is it ok to just close your eyes and spam to WS macro (so to speak)?

No, he doesn't recover hp like Shinryu does. But he does absorb fire and light (SC's included) damage when magna hoplon is up, and overall resists the **** out of light, dark and fire. Aolian edge brew should be fine. :)

You might be able to do it without aegis on pld/rdm, but it'd probably require a very good fire resist build that firaga 4 + acheron flame x2 combo at low hp doesn't own you.

Thanks again.

Not sure if you would know and not really keen to test a popset on him to find out but can BST solo Orthrus with just the pet engaged?
#8 Mar 31 2013 at 7:49 PM Rating: Excellent
If you were to use something like Gooey, which is Water based, I imagine you'd be able to handle him without much difficulty. However, remember that when Orthrus howls, his primary target loses all enmity, so he will book it towards you afterward. I would assume that Falcorr could also handle him, but he'd take some more damage than Gooey from Orthrus's fire attacks.

I guess I could always 'snarl' but might be hairy at times.

My BST equip isn't too bad, and got atmas to suit, ducal guard, future fabulous... might be doable maybe, i really wouldn't know.

Havnt seen any mention of an Orthrus solo anywhere except when brewed.

Seems he raged, took quite some time to get him down, at about 20% I stopped making any ground on him and he became much harder.

The tactics I chose were clearly not right.

He doesn't use Acheron's Flame until his HP has dropped below 50% (might be lower than that, but I forget exactly). I don't know offhand if he'll rage, but I doubt it, given that Abyssea serves as its own time limiting factor.

Sorry I just edited my post, after about 70 mins I noticed he was much harder to kill, I was just not hurting him at that point, after a very slow and event less 70 mins it did become a lot harder and to the point where I had to warp out with him around 25%, I did get him to about 20% at one point, but then it just got impossible.

He didn't use acherons flame until he was around 30% and it was only doing around 250-300 on my pet... I used the same pet from 100% to 20%.... then It just got hard, like I hit a wall.

Is it possible to pop 2 x Orthrus at the same time (with a 2nd char holding KI) and then brew the 2 down together with Aeolian edge?

Is that possible?
#15 Apr 05 2013 at 3:49 AM Rating: Excellent
I don't know how much damage a brewed Aeolian Edge will do on Orthrus, but yes, it'd be possible to. Like all the other major Abyssea NMs (the Empyrean +2 item drops/Empyrean weapon item drops, etc) have three different ??? fairly close to one another, so you'd be able to pop them and bring them close together to Aeolian Edge without much issue.

Thankyou.

I saw a you tube clip of a (forgive me) under equipped DNC WS Orthrus down with a brew by hitting Evisceration a lot... I would 'guess' Aeolian edge would be more damaging and also necessary in order to do multiple kills on one brew?
#17 Apr 05 2013 at 8:46 AM Rating: Excellent
The main reason that brews do so well when it comes to Magical weaponskills is that it gives +900 Magic Attack Bonus along with +999 for all stats. Because of this, and the fact that after awhile, +stats only do so much for physical weaponskills, magical attacks are going to do so much more under the effect of a brew. Nukes, magical weaponskills, magic-based job abilities (Cor's Quickdraw and Run's Lunge), etc will do significantly more damage under the effect of a brew.

Even if you were just going to brew down a single Orthrus, using Aeolian Edge would still be quicker.

When you do your brew, I would recommend using Atmas suited to boost your damage further. Atma of Gales off Alkonost in Abyssea - Konschtat and Atma of the Smiting Blow off Ironclad Smiter in Abyssea - Altepa are your two best ones to equip. After that, any good +MAB one will also work. Those two however will offer huge boosts as far as Aeolian Edge output.

Popped 2 x Orthrus at the same time today, atmas I used were gales, razed ruins and stormbird.

Brew went well, I popped my orthrus and then my friend popped thiers and I spammed Aeolian edge and mine died within a minute and then I targeted the other orthrus and finished it off.

However, the 2nd orthrus, the one my friend popped was 'white' and unclaimed until I was hitting it. Any idea why? as they had engaged it and still had weapons drawn but was not hitting it as they didn't want to get nuked by 2 x orthrus at the same time.

Any way I can have both stay red/claimed at the same time whilst I am spamming brewed WS's incasesomeone runs past and tries to steal an unclaimed orthrus?

For the record the drops were 2x claws twice, so 4 claws from that brew.

Yes, have your friend (in your party) throw something at it. You cannot personally keep claim on two monsters at once unless you get lucky.

You know it's a sign of our times when someone can be working on an ultimate weapon but not know how the claim system works. I don't know what I feel about that.

That is extremely poor of you to say that openly on a public forum and not try and message me first.

I asked a question because when my friend popped her Orthrus it was red for her, but as I was WSing the 2 of them down the one my friend popped then turned white and was effectively unclaimed, even tho she had physically hit it (she then backed off so as not to get hit by 2 Orthus's casting -gas at the same time).

So I asked a question as to why this would happen as I have never brewed 2 monsters at the same moment with the same WS.

I had always read your posts with utter respect Erecia but you have significantly down graded yourself in my eyes by not trying to help but instead choosing to have a dig at me when it was both unnecessary and uncalled for.

Okay okay guys. Let's not fight or anything.

Danseur, even though it's yellow, hitting Orthrus with a brewed Aeolian Edge is going to put you high enough on the hate list that a random person passing by wouldn't be able to just voke it and pull it away. One person can't keep multiple monsters red at the same time though, so your friend would need to routinely be acting on it to keep it red to her.

Naw, they don't have to act on it routinely. They have to act on it once at any point after disengaging. Here is what happened:

PlayerA and PlayerB are in a party
PlayerA pops OrthrusA
PlayerB pops OrthrusB
PlayerA and Player B engage their respective Orthrus copies
PlayerA pops a brew
PlayerB disengages OrthrusB, because they want to get out of range so they don't die to double Orthrus spam
PlayerA starts Aeolian Edging OrthrusA
OrthrusB goes white because PlayerB disengaged from it while they had claim (this has a delay of ~5 seconds after disengage)
PlayerA has hate on both copies, but they can only claim one and they are acting on OrthrusA
Thus, OrthrusA is claimed and OrthrusB is white

Also, it's not really apparent that the white Orthrus would be unsteal-able for two reasons:
1) Magical WSs only give hate proportional to their base damage before fSTAT and non-fTP multipliers, so a level 99 character using Aeolian Edge with 999 DEX/INT and 300 TP actually only gets you about 830 CE at the moment and ~2500 VE even though we would expect it to do >23,000 damage.

2) Even if they capped enmity (which would be difficult before killing the monster due to #1), it should still be possible at the moment to cap enmity in a different way and then act on the monster twice in rapid succession, granting claim to a second party.

Your version of events is almost exactly how we did it Byrthnoth, except my friend didn't disengage her Orthrus, although she did only pop it, and hit it once.

A little confused by the last 2 parts of your post, are you saying that a 'passer-by' would not be able to steal the white Orthrus like the Prof is saying or are you saying it could be stolen/taken whilst white even if I had WS'd it down 25-50% before the 1st (my pop) dies?

This seems like an overdramatic response to a comment that, while admittedly not helpful or particularly on topic, wasn't even a dig either. I must have hit a nerve far harder than I intended.

The idea here was less "lol ur a scrub" and more just musing on how the game had changed. In the hardcore endgame days, we'd have entire holding parties for NMs we didn't want to go unclaimed, and everyone in endgame linkshells got drilled about building hate even on monsters they had no intention of fighting to make sure that, if the tank died, at least someone in the party would still be able to keep it claimed. Everyone in the shell got all the particulars into their head within the first week or so. The possibility of losing a sky god or fafnir or something was too real to risk otherwise.

So, if someone working on a relic had asked your type of question, it would be met with a sort of blind bewilderment that they wouldn't have figured it out by now but somehow had the resources to be going after the most powerful weapons in the game.

That all of this knowledge isn't relevant anymore because none of the stuff that I *DID* in the game (alliance-style hnm fights in open environments where stealing was a legit strategy against someone who was losing) is relevant anymore is... well, it's jarring.

If she ran out of range then she would have been forced to disengage.

Also, I'm saying that the second Orthrus probably is stealable without a great deal of effort due to how magic WS enmity is calculated. 2x 4k damage Ukko's Furys probably gives more enmity than four 20,000 damage Aeolian Edges and would also claim the monster. A PLD dumping its JAs and casting Flash could probably also claim it off you. So yeah, you do have to try and keep your Orthruses red.

And as far as the "you don't know the claim system, so I'm disgusted that you're working on an lolempyrean weapon"... I have to say that until I went out and did the testing / made that page on bgwiki, the claim system was not very well understood. Most people regardless how "veteran"-ish they feel still don't actually understand it, because they haven't visited the obscure page on an obscure website and read about it.

Thankyou very much.

Took my upgraded weapon into Aby-altepa and tested it on my usual mob when im 'messing' around (sand sweepers) and to be honest I didn't really notice anything different between the 85-90 version.

Popped Tabilla and pretty much did the same to that too...

Was hoping for a little more after all the recent effort, slightly disappointed with the upgrade, but not with the weapon itself.

The base damage and the Dex increase wouldn't result in a HUGE increase to Twashtar/Rudra's Storm damage, but the increase would be there all the same. It wouldn't necessarily be something so noticeably large that you could easily just eyeball it, but if you were to have parsed yourself over a long period of time with your 85 Twashtar, and then the 90 Twashtar under the same conditions (same mobs at the same level, same buffs, etc), the 90 would come out ahead.

What would the best offhand be now with the 90 Twash mainhanded?

I spent some time getting the 99 DA+11 dagger which is nice when it kicks in, but no idea on DPS of this or other daggers.

Really like the OAT aspect, ever since when I got a joy toy long ago... just love seeing multi hits.
