Ok, I'm trying to understand the Saber and Fan dance mechanics.
According to the talk page under Saber Dance at ffxiclopedia, http://wiki.ffxiclopedia.org/wiki/Talk:Saber_Dance, the cumulative double attack over five minutes for saber dance is:
1 merit: 24.00%
2 merits: 26.67%
3 merits: 30.00%
4 merits: 34.29%
5 merits: 40.00%
Can someone please confirm this? it seems a bit high. If it's really 40% why not go 5/5 Reverse, 5/5 Haste Samba, 5/5 Saber, 1/5 fan, 4/5 closed position?
And at 5/5 Saber, would the double attack magian still be a good choice?

I've always considered putting more into Fan. Having the timer up earlier would mean more time with higher strength damage reduction, reducing damage taken in longer fights by hundreds or thousands of damage. But I don't quite tank enough on DNC to justify it.

I went the route of 1/5 Fan, 1/5 Saber, 5/5 NFR, and 3/5 Closed Position. For the most part I'm extremely happy with that choice.
Someday -- maybe -- I may consider swapping out Closed Position for additional Fan Dance merits, but that day is probably still a ways off.
edit: NFR, not Reverse. :p

Awsome. Thanks to all of you. for now I'm planning 1/5 saber, 1/5 fan, 3/5 nfr, 5/5 closed for my tier 2 merits. 5/5 Reverse Flourish and Haste Samba for tier 1.
I know this is the common build, but I didn't feel like just blindly taking it. Now I think it will be the best build for what I plan to do.

5/5 Haste 5/5 Reverse 1/Fan 1/Saber are the easy ones. 3/5 Closed Position and 5/5 No Foot Rise or 5/5 Closed and 3/5 NFR are the only significant deviations. The arguments against either are relatively minor. I go 5/5 NFR so I can be certain to be able to solo skillchain or pull max TP out of nowhere in an emergency, but I don't scoff at the people that choose the Closed Position route.

heh, I think I've gone through every single category 2 setup with the exception of 5/5 saber dance and I still haven't settled on one that I like.
Right now I'm at 1 saber, 4 fan, 5 NFR, and 0 CP. The 1 SD and 5 NFR I'm pretty sure are going to stay as is....FD and CP are the ones I have trouble balancing since both are useful in their own ways...when it comes to tanking/soloing that is.
But I guess it doesn't really matter since we can pretty much recap merits super quickly and change them as needed...

Presto -> Step (miss) -> NFR (2) -> Step (presto is still up, so 5) -> Reverse Flourish
If I had 3 NFR, I'd waste the third most of the time. I've never had a use for extra Fan Dance, because I only really lean on the ability when AoE killing in Abyssea or fighting very specific fights. When I do end up leaning on it, it's more for the 20% damage reduction than the -90~30%.
So no use for >2 NFR and no use for >1 Fan Dance. Saber Dance 1->5 is only worth 1% Double Attack, so I'd rather have 15 Eva/Acc and 0.25% DA
