Because I can't figure out if evasion or -damage taken is the better survival tool on DNC. Mainly thinking about order of upgrades for magian daggers. I'm looking into a surviver/solo build mostly, since the job looks fun to "tank" in, but doesn't look like it holds hate all too well with other melee dealing damage.
Most soloers I've managed to cast a glimpse at seemed to favor evasion, but perhaps there is some critical level to get evasion to be useful?

Generally speaking, evasion is preferable, since taking no damage > taking less damage.
Damage taken becomes a larger consideration when you can't avoid being hit, or as a fallback when other defenses (such as shadows from /NIN) are down. DNC doesn't really have the tools to build for mobs hitting for 0 most of the time (like native Phalanx users/etc), so in any case you likely wouldn't be using that sort of set full-time.
Well, as a general thing, enough to make survival feasible. Ideally, you'd want to be more or less capped (~80% evasion rate). DNC really doesn't have that hard a time doing that for a lot of mobs, but it does take some gearing for. The exact amount you need will vary depending on the mob.

Evasion is generally the better thing to gear for. There are instances where your evasion will be mostly useless though, and in these cases -PDT *might* be able to shine.

Against your average VT/IT monster (85), what should you be around for that?
Hard to say, as mobs have varying accuracy. It's kind of like asking how much accuracy you'd need to get a 95% hit rate.
For an IT level mob, I'd use as much as I could reasonably accomodate without latents/etc.
