I guess I'm a little weird, since I tend to macro almost all my JAs (and I'm counting maneuvers in there, even though they're technically pet commands). I also don't use the unofficial windower, so sometimes it's a bit tricky getting gear swaps to work with only six lines.
Speaking of gear swaps, I still need to farm up colibri feathers so my LS leader can synth me a Buffoon's collar.
Nah, a lot of people do that. I used to too, but I switched from PS2 to PC without having a good PC controller, so I was forced to do it keyboard style and that just isn't comfortable for me. After I got my G11 it became really easy. Then the G11 died, and I was back to a normal keyboard for a while, but the fact that I've always had an inhumanly fast typing speed (200+wpm) ended up coming into play, because I'm just faster at typing out aliases than I am at hitting macros that I don't have good muscle memory for. I have a G510 and finally got it working with FFXI, but then I stopped playing regularly
With what I've got worked out though; anything I didn't need a gearswap for set up as an alias that I'd memorized (mostly JAs, like berserk (//zerk), activate (//act), or ventriloquy (//vent) and pet commands, (deactivate (//dct), deploy (//d), retrieve (//r)), but also some spells, like utsusemi (/ichi and /ni))
There's no reason NOT to macro the appropriate items (AF1 hands, Empyrean+2 body, Buffoon's collar, possibly a few +stat items if appropriate) when you're using a maneuver. Doing otherwise is just gimping yourself, and the job needs to be played to the fullest, otherwise it will continue to receive stigma because of people playing it half-assed and not bothering to get proper gear or use macros like they would with any other job, because they don't see it as "real" job and just use it for "fun" and don't take it seriously.
Yea, you're splitting hairs there. Remember the golden rule of FFXI: **** is situational. If you're someone who's hard pressed for inventory space and you're taking pup out to do some solo stuff, like farming, or NM hunting, you absolutely can afford to leave behind the collar, misc stat+ **** and probably your AF gloves too, unless you're going to be heavy-ice-spam nuking. But hey, who am I
to rail into someone about how pup should be played.
