PUP AF1 hands questionFollow

Been seriously getting into PUP, and I read Jinte's gear guide. I understand that AF hands are a macro piece for maneuvers, but for how long? Is that something I want to still be using at 99?

There really isn't any alternative to those (other than the +1 version) for both the Maneuver effect and the reduction to Overload rate. It's one of those pieces of AF that are good from the moment you get it onward (like Sam's Myochin Kabuto for Meditate and Warding Circle).

I had a feeling that was the case, but I wanted to be sure. Thanks for the confirmation.

Yeah hands are indispensable forever. Overload reduction is nice, but it's really for the extra attribute boosts for each maneuver that you only get with AF/AF+1 hands (same rate for both).

Worth mentioning that AF/+1 feet also remain permanently useful in a repair macro.

I'll have to remember that. Need to fight Ob for that earring at some point, too.

Note, however, that depending on what you're doing, you can get away with not using AF gloves. All they do is add a +5 to the maneuver burden cap, and increase the stat gain from maneuvers by 1, which really only makes a visible difference if you're spamming ice maneuvers, and even then the difference is tiny (but you'll want them anyway because the burden redux is a lot more useful).

If you're doing something where you're not riding multiples (3x ice, 3x wind, etc), then you shouldn't really need the overload redux, provided you've got a decent feel for your pacing. If you're just alternating three different manuevers, one every 20 seconds, (ie: wind, fire, thunder) plus or minus the WS maneuver depending on the frame, then your burden for each maneuver will negate itself by the time the next maneuver goes up. That said, the argument there can be made for minmaxing, which I won't dispute.

Basically, what I'm getting at is that while I tend to carry my AF gloves on me, I don't use macros for maneuvers, unless I'm partying with pup (read: basically never), I'm nuking, or I'm fighting something that's making me ride light maneuvers more than normal. All my maneuvers are handled by 2 letter aliases: /fm, /tm, /am, /wm, /em, /im, /dm, /lm (/am for wind maneuver because air). Though, I do pretty much the same thing for all of my **** that doesn't need heavy gear swaps (most JAs, spells, etc), especially if I'm solo, just because it's faster for me than making my fingers do the awkward dance of trying to hit the wonky as ctrl/alt macros (anything beyond 1-5 is just uncomfortable for me to use), though that's more when I don't have my g510 working, which is about half the time.

I guess I'm a little weird, since I tend to macro almost all my JAs (and I'm counting maneuvers in there, even though they're technically pet commands). I also don't use the unofficial windower, so sometimes it's a bit tricky getting gear swaps to work with only six lines.

Speaking of gear swaps, I still need to farm up colibri feathers so my LS leader can synth me a Buffoon's collar.

Nah, a lot of people do that. I used to too, but I switched from PS2 to PC without having a good PC controller, so I was forced to do it keyboard style and that just isn't comfortable for me. After I got my G11 it became really easy. Then the G11 died, and I was back to a normal keyboard for a while, but the fact that I've always had an inhumanly fast typing speed (200+wpm) ended up coming into play, because I'm just faster at typing out aliases than I am at hitting macros that I don't have good muscle memory for. I have a G510 and finally got it working with FFXI, but then I stopped playing regularly Smiley: laugh With what I've got worked out though; anything I didn't need a gearswap for set up as an alias that I'd memorized (mostly JAs, like berserk (//zerk), activate (//act), or ventriloquy (//vent) and pet commands, (deactivate (//dct), deploy (//d), retrieve (//r)), but also some spells, like utsusemi (/ichi and /ni))

There's no reason NOT to macro the appropriate items (AF1 hands, Empyrean+2 body, Buffoon's collar, possibly a few +stat items if appropriate) when you're using a maneuver. Doing otherwise is just gimping yourself, and the job needs to be played to the fullest, otherwise it will continue to receive stigma because of people playing it half-assed and not bothering to get proper gear or use macros like they would with any other job, because they don't see it as "real" job and just use it for "fun" and don't take it seriously.

Yea, you're splitting hairs there. Remember the golden rule of FFXI: **** is situational. If you're someone who's hard pressed for inventory space and you're taking pup out to do some solo stuff, like farming, or NM hunting, you absolutely can afford to leave behind the collar, misc stat+ **** and probably your AF gloves too, unless you're going to be heavy-ice-spam nuking. But hey, who am I to rail into someone about how pup should be played. Smiley: rolleyes
