I recently unlocked Stringing Pummel, then I discovered that when my automaton WSed Magic Mortar - my SP created a Gravitation skillchain . . . and I was like OMG! Wow. Now that's damage! So then I think, hmm, magic burst - let's try that. So after about a dozen attempts I think I don't know wtf I'm doing.
I'm not getting any message that I've created a magic burst (don't know if I should be); the damage I'm getting from the blue magic spell is meh. I don't see any cool animation like I see with the Gravitation skillchain. Am I expecting too much of a sub-level magic burst? Am I mis-timing something? My actions are (1) wait for automaton to WS magic mortar; (2) hit Stringing Pummel; (3) hit job ability, burst afinity; (4) trigger blue magic spell (tried Blood Saber, Death Ray, Digest, Blood Drain) - I think my top damage from the blue spell was 80ish.
AMIDOINGITWRONG?
You never get any animation other than the normal spell animation when you pull off a magic burst. You'll only ever get the message in the chat log. As for trying to MB a BLU spell in the first place....
There is a reason most BLUs don't bother MBing their magical spells. They suck, not the BLUs, the spells; they are very slow casting, generally underpowered compared to the mobs you learned the move from, and ridiculously high in the MP department.
And with all that said, the reason you aren't MBing with that short list of spells you gave is because of their casting time and your timing most likely. Not one of them has a casting time under 4 sec. So after you close a SC, you've been trying to hit BA and then cast the spell. Wrong. What you want to do if you are dead-set on doing it is hit BA right before you WS to make a SC and then start spamming you spell macro as soon as the SC animation begins. That should do the trick.
Now, i'm a firm believer in the "its your account and as long as it don't hurt me, do w/e" approach, but i will say after glancing at your character on FFXIAH, i'd drop trying for extra dmg with /blu and focus on getting /war and /nin capped for use. In the long run, you will do much more dmg with /war for DoT and with /nin for not having to focus on repairing dmg since shadows block so much of it.
Disregard my suggestion of course if your profile there is out of date though..
