Okay went into this fight completely overconfident and Ob (sharpshot) handed me back my a$$ lol. I was dual boxing thf/pup and whm/rdm an I don't think Ob missed my Thf at all and the damage was like whoa. So time to think of a better strategy that I can use that includes a thf, maybe thf/pup and have Pld/rdm straight tank him?
Thoughts? Guess I could kite him around and go THF + RDM or THF + Bard. What job combo with a thf would work without kiting?? Doh I could have used whm head for added heals ><;;.

Your problem was that you chose the sharpshot frame, which has ridiculously high accuracy and spams nasty weaponskills. Plus I think he's a bit evasive too. If you want an easier fight, go for valoredge, which has high defense but is fairly tame, or for stormwaker, which has the same spells as a 75 blm but is very squishy. (I don't think its silencable, but you can stun it)
I forgot what maneuvers trigger those two, I think it was earth maneuvers, and possibly fire? for valoredge. Stormwaker is ice and dark and I think water works too.

Yeah for sure sharp shot was a mistake valoredge seems safer and if the BLM is super squishy hopefully would go down fast lol. I think I did almost everything wrong and never should have done it first thing after waking up but I thought this was gonna be cake lol.
Next time pop as Valor and when I reach 100 tp force switch to BLM WS and force switch back to valor and repeat that hopefully for a easy win.

Yeah thats the right idea. Put Earth and Light up and then pop him. He will immediately change to VE at the start.
From then on, its just as you say. Force him into SW when you have 100% TP and then force him back into VE after you weaponskill. If you have NIN to sub, go with that. VE has crap accuracy and, with shadows, you will rarely ever take damage.
Posting Eidens strategy because its exactly what I do and it works:
Im 2/2 on him as well, getting a Steam Jacket and Disruptor my first time and zilch on my second. I hope to bring a THF out there with me sometime this weekend to beat him up a few more times but I have to farm some zeni first.

Any suggestions on how to get IS for the undersees ruins access from the transporter? I burned all my IS for the last set of attachments purchasable with imperial points and now I'm struggling with 300 IS to cover the cost of traveling to Ob to even fight him. What's the next fastest route there without transporting?
Besieged!! Man I wish they happened more often. Basically gonna need silver/Mythril beastcoin and can enter from many of the guarded areas.

Last time I did a level 8 Beseiged (maybe 2 weeks ago), I walked away with 2k IS. Its not much but I also didnt put my full effort into that Besieged, just Cured a lot on my 38WHM and spent a good portion dead when I went afk. I dont know if they adjusted it since but I thought that was decent. Its certainly enough to buy a few runic portal passes.

I believe it and campaign both got buffed as far as rewards are concerned for xp/is/an. A lowbie job is gonna get much less than a 90 at 2k sounds like it was after the patch for sure before that 1kish was it for 75+.

Yeah this was definitely post patch. I took my WHM out there specifically because of the XP/IS increase.
I need to start really watching for Beseieged since you can buy imperials coins with IS and trade them in for jettons to buy the Soultrapper 2000. Thats the most annoying part about Ob and ZNMs in general. Pankration is a must unless you have a nice stockpile of IS....unless there is something Im missing. The regular Soultrapper just doesnt cut it with its 1 min recast and 12 charges.
Now that I brought it up, any pointers for jetton earning or do I basically just throw my monster into a few Pankration matches and hope it wins. I wish I could just leave him in Pankration all day and come back to a decent amount :(

I have an Ob story, tried him yesterday actually. It turned out more rewarding than the OP's story.
I wanted to go and try him because I heard someone on here talking about pup/nin solo. I get out to Whitegate and there is a Beseiged about to start, so I decide to go try that first. We won against the trolls (much easier now that we're 90) and I earned around 5k ISP. Also met a friend on bst doing Beseiged who also has a pup. I started talking and he said he'd come help, and also told me that Ob was down to 1600 Zeni, which I had. I grabbed the item and changed to /nin while he came pup/thf.
We decided to keep him in Sharpshot form, probably not the best idea, especially since I havn't been /nin in a while. I couldn't keep shadows up and ended up dying. My friend had Valoredge frame and he took hate when I dropped. He used Vent and gave his auto hate, then WS and took it back. Ob weaponskilled him and he dropped to 4 HP! Role Reversal, Repair and he's back in the game.
Killed him and he dropped his earring (which I still needed), Target Marker, and Barrier Module. He lotted the attachments and then zoned out and I got the earring. He gave me the attachments since he had them already.

A good way to get Jettons, is to only put your pankration monster in the Diabolos pit - the monster there is usually max level (50), thus if your monster is under level 40 or so, you'll get 100 EXP/Jettons for each fight you lose.
Btw, a really good way of getting soul plates are the baby Fafnir thingies in Abyssea - Tahrongi. Get them to low HP, get as many pictures as you can, and no matter what the old man wants, they'll be worth 100 zeni each plate.

Forcing it into SW is a BAD idea. I've done the fight about 10 times as solo 90 PUP/NIN, and it can one-shot a 90 player. Magic Mortar ignores shadows, and at low HP will outright kill you. At high HP, an illtimed Thunder IV or Thundaga III can do the same.
Stick with Valoredge all the way. It's not that accurate, and other then Shield Bash everything is absorbed by shadows. It takes a while to kill this way, but it's perfectly safe.

Lol, I came here to post the same thing after I ate dirt on my third attempt at him. Got him down to 20-30% when I took a 1300 dmg magic mortar to the face.
I still think it can be done if you change him into SW right after he uses a WS but you better make sure you have the manuevers lined up to get him right back into VE form before hes ready to WS again.
After that, I did 2 runs and kept him in VE the whole time. Like you said, it is slow, but its also very easy and theres hardly any risk as long as you keep your shadows up.
4/5 on him so far with Percolator and Disruptor dropping.

I guess they could keep up with trick attack, but I'm not sure how much better that would actually be in general. Also, nothing precludes you fighting valoredge and having SS tank then, because I'd think that should survive a fair bit longer, as the VE Ob has much lower acc and sharpshot supposedly has pretty good evasion, yeah? I get that it doesn't matter a ton if your puppet dies, but if you aren't 5/5 ventriloquiy, you'll definitely want it to live at least a few minutes.

Haven't done this myself, but in the video, the guy took down Ob in almost no time flat. Between Armor Shatterer and Barrage, his pet kept hate quite well, and the SS he was fighting is squishy. But I'm all for trying the fight against VE. Actually, I might like the VE fight better because it allows for more chances to land TH+. My plan for the THF was basically just to have them spam SA and TA for TH procs, but probably not dd much more than that, so as not to pull hate. If I can ever convince her to go, I'll post on how the fight goes.

Done Ob 6 times now PUP/NIN Soulsoother frame with a THF and a RDM, and only 1 new attachment, that being the Percolator. Gave it away to a new player (daughter of a friend) since my skills are all capped
The hardest thing about doing Ob is getting TH high enough to get the drops to pop reliable. With Treasure Hunter 9 you are not guaranteed a drop, At Treasure Hunter 10 the drop rate isn't bad, usually netting one of each of the 3 sets that Ob drops (original Ob drops, 1st additional group and new 2011 set). Having Ob on Valor edge is critical. The best way to do it is with a PUP to put Ob in VE mode and a THF to tank and kill Ob. The PUP should only engage long enough to force Ob to change to VE then disengage. If the THF can get TH to 10 then the PUP can help kill.
