So, if you had a PL heal you, how would you do as a COR doing FoVs for xp? Would I try to just /nin and stab things to death like a gimpy nin or thf? Is this a lost cause? Obviously I'd pt as much as I can, but how viable would this be for semi-solo? I have bst up to 75, would Cor/BST help pre-70?
COR/BST would indeed be good. BST and PUP rolls would help your pets quite a bit, just play it like BST pre-Leave.
If you don't feel like /BST, I'd personally probably /DNC for COR solo. Drain Samba is nice, and spamming steps is really quite effective - lots of Box Step use speeds things up. It's also a really good way to max out campaign battle experience. Once you hit 60-ish, I'd suggest taking a good look at campaign for your exp needs - particularly if you're interested in any Allied Note armor sets.
I don't think /NIN is that great for a solo COR who's meleeing stuff to death - especially pre-74COR/37NIN for Utsusemi: Ni. The only real benefit is shadows, and Utsusemi:Ichi only isn't very good when you have hate since you'll get interrupted a lot or have your timer down. Oh, and you'll have to spend gil on tools to boot. Not only do you get no real offensive boost (like you would with /DNC's Accuracy Bonus and effects of steps), which makes you kill slower in and of itself, but you'll also be spending DoT time re-casting. Either that, or you'll just get lazy or ignore shadows, meaning you're getting no real use out of /NIN other than looking kinda cool holding 2x weapons.
As for solo rolls, Dancer's Roll for a very healthy amount of Regen is really nice and you'll get it soon. I also like to use Ninja, Corsair's, Chaos, Fighter's, and Samurai rolls for soloing depending on the situation.
And yes, there would be a lot of stabbing stuff to death like a gimpy NIN or THF... who has Slug Shot ;). You don't need to waste a bunch of ammo soloing, just get a solid DoT weapon and swing away. Use ammo for skilling up, or for the occasional WS (which does happen less often if you're /DNC and using a lot of dances).
Another nice thing about soloing is that you CAN keep your marksmanship skill up. Just shoot stuff when you're falling below cap until you catch back up. I know fighting EPs is hard to give you skillups when you're 1-2 job levels behind in skill, but if you're level 55 and you have marksmanship skill of, say, a capped skill lv50 COR... you can get some decent skillups on EP mobs and keep yourself relatively close.
When I solo on stuff that gives exp, I often take the 30% exp hit from using a NPC fellow too. Yes, it makes leveling up even slower. But you'll be happy when you have an actually USEFUL NPC that you can pull out (mine's 66 atm, working on capping her at 70). Also, NPCs ARE hit by rolls. I soloed weapon breaks for Gun and Dagger of Trials with my NPC (Fierce Attacker style), using Samurai/Dancer's Rolls for both of us. I've used Evoker's on my healing NPC to watch her waste all her MP, then get refreshed enough to keep spamming stuff on her endless quest to exhaust her MP pool as soon as possible.
Another nice thing about COR solo - Light Shot. It's great for sleeping adds, or if you find yourself fighting a really tough mob and you decide you need to run away.
