Magic burst - as a /blu; anyone do this?Follow

I recently unlocked Stringing Pummel, then I discovered that when my automaton WSed Magic Mortar - my SP created a Gravitation skillchain . . . and I was like OMG! Wow. Now that's damage! So then I think, hmm, magic burst - let's try that. So after about a dozen attempts I think I don't know wtf I'm doing.

I'm not getting any message that I've created a magic burst (don't know if I should be); the damage I'm getting from the blue magic spell is meh. I don't see any cool animation like I see with the Gravitation skillchain. Am I expecting too much of a sub-level magic burst? Am I mis-timing something? My actions are (1) wait for automaton to WS magic mortar; (2) hit Stringing Pummel; (3) hit job ability, burst afinity; (4) trigger blue magic spell (tried Blood Saber, Death Ray, Digest, Blood Drain) - I think my top damage from the blue spell was 80ish.

If you're landing the spell at the proper time, then yes, you should be getting a magic burst message in the log. However, even with a magic burst, you're really not going to see a lot as far as damage is concerned, given that it's /blu. The damage is going to likely be so low that the time you're spending casting you could have landed a punch or two and done more damage.

None of the spells you stated are capable of anything more than pinprick damage, even from a BLU main, and even when bursted.

I always thought it was kind of stupid that BLU even needs a JA to be able to do a magic burst, considering that most of their magic-damage spells aren't even that great even when bursted. Worth noting that Burst Affinity can be readied prior to your closing WS, though. Chain/Burst Affinity is only consumed when a compatible spell is cast (or if you wait too long, 30 seconds I think)
