Coming back - Questions on SmnFollow

Been a long time, a year atleast, and I gotta couple questions since the sticky was last updated 3 years ago (amazing to think its been that long....anyway....)

First, will I get a lot of flak if, when I start playing smn, I don't have the end game summons? I seem to remember hearing a little bit about that issue before I quit before...

Second, how's the subjob situation? Smn still stuck as /whm 90% of the time, or are other options viable now (like maybe /sch or /dnc)? I quit last time a bit after WotG came out, so I am curious how well the newer jobs played out for smn.

On a related note, I know about astral parties, but outside of burns, how in demand are summoners? Do you get invites for nonburn parties? I means, burns sound cool, but having the option to do other things is always nice.

Finally, anything else I should know before focusing on summoner? Any gear that I can get before 30 that would help a bunch or anything? Thanks for any input, looking forward to coming back.

Edit: Side question - cause everyone has to ask when making a new account...any suggestion on server?

You'll want Fenrir at 43. Should be able to get fairly easily with a few lv75 friends, of 3-4 75 SMN friends.
Diabolos, with the new Favor system (to be put into place this coming update) you will probably want him at lv55 (when you get Favor) as he offers refresh.
He will be harder to get, but still doable if you have some decently geared and able friends.

The other SMN's you can get the the Mini-Fork (lv20) solo battles.

WHM 80% of the time, SCH the other 20%.
SCH is very useful in situations where you dont have to take care of -na spells or erase and such. You'll still be expected to help Back-up cure no-matter your subjob.

About as much as they were previously. Not much has changed in this department.
We might be sought after for Mana burn parties depending on how this Favor update pans out for us.

In the early levels it's mostly about MP if you want to party.
SE has a new system called FoV (Fields of Valor) basically you pick a training page from a book which will read like "Kill 5 Crawlers and 5 Yags" You can then run around and kill 5 EP/DC crawlers/yags and not only getting the xp from the mobs you get a bonus when you cross them off the list.
You can do 1 page per game day (repeat the same page as many times as you want) so soloing has become a lot faster for everyone.

They're all the same. Except the ones locked (Odin, Bahamut) because they were over croweded.

This is worth reading for returning players.

I dont see how this would be a problem at all. Especially not during the climb to 75. If you end up getting a party, you will most likely have need for that MP to heal and not so much to summon. In the case that you do have to summon, this mostly comes down to Titan's stoneskin or Garuda's Blink/Haste. Diabolos is nice to have starting 75 for when you go after gods/HNM for Nether Blast ofcourse. But really, you shouldnt have to worry about that just yet.

It mostly is either /WHM or /SCH. Unfortunately, /SCH works best if you dont have anyone to cast refresh on you (this interfere's with Sublimation, and is generally weaker than refresh, plus without stoneskin you cannot rest with it up), and if you are facing off against monsters that you can Aspir.

Well, i hate to say this. But ever since i picked SMN back up at 51 all the way to 75, with my flag up all the time, i have got exactly 1 invite to a regular party. Which on top of that was a friend asking me if i wanted to come cure for his party since he saw me solo for days now.

Maybe Carbuncle Mitts? They're level 20, and cut Carbuncle's MP perpetuation down in half. Outside of that, i shouldnt worry about it too much. Focus on MP gear as much as you can where available. Depending on your race, the RSE pieces (around level 30) can be spectacular for MP. Also the Event MP+1% egg is great to pick up, yet i havent got a clue when the next egg event is being held again. There's also the MP+3% hat from the Halloween event, if that is still going on? Easy enough to obtain. Dont worry about it too much.

Pick whichever name you like most, basically. They all have the same good things and the same bad things. Well, except for Kujata. We seem to be the designated target for botting HNM shells to transfer to... Mostly since our EG is one-sided and a mess.

Short answer: Nothing has changed.

But that answer is more about the SMN situation, not about what SMNs can do.

Ironically, I never once put my flag up after I hit 50 SMN, and yet I was invited to a number of parties - but I turned every one of them down. I was having too much fun soloing.

This makes me happy to hear. I never got a chance to try soloing past 30 last time I played, so I had no idea if I could solo or if I'd have to sit around waiting for invites. I hate just sitting around...that's what made me quit my first time when I hit 58 on my whm...

It's not just the jobs as far as invites go, its the balance of the other jobs at this point in time. I think the coming update will help summoner out on invites, but generally i used to get merit invites on smn all the time up until the end of last year when they suddenly all stopped.

Yea, it is an endless efficiency spiral.

I'd be surprised if people partied without BRD+COR these days, and of course a RDM for healing.
