Hey all,
Since I've decided to retire my RDM for the time being I'm looking for another job to play. I've been eyeballing SMN and thinking it could be fun. I've also thought about how underused SMN is.
When I make a party, if I bring in a SMN I want them to be a buffing job, not a Cure III machine. In fact, RDM + SMN is one my favorite back line combinations just due to sheer fun. Since I make over 90% of my parties I wouldn't have to sit back there and spam curing spells.
The thing that is confusing me is the avatar fights? Trial size or Prime? Arethey something that a player can get through fairly easily? Also, because I'm on CoP 3-5 right now so I'm could easily pick up Diabolos. How major a battle is Fenrir?

Enjoy your wonderful parties of assault -> BP -> roll thumbs for 1 minute. Of course that is no different from a melee, but at least they deal respectable damage.

I don't know about anyone else, but when I wasn't a Cure III bot in parties, I stayed pretty busy.
If you aren't back-up curing every now and then to help with mana conservation then you are wrong. 1 Rage & 1 Ward + helping out with status removal (if needed) & back up curing every battle isn't that bad. Repetitive, yes; Boring, yes; Mind numbing, sometimes; but what job isn't at some point?

Do the prime fights. Since you have a RDM you may be able to solo them. The biggest advantage of the prime fights vs the trial size fights is that if you do the prime fights, you can use the "trial size" quest to warp to the battlefield (you get the fork from the NPC and they warp you). Its helpful if you need to get to that area quickly. If you get the avatars via the "trial size" quests, once you actually beat the quest you can no longer get the free warp. So, if you value a free warp to all the cloisters (sp?) do the prime fights.
I never found Diabolos to be all that useful outside of VERY specific situations. Fenrir is VERY useful though - he isnt too hard if you have 5 other lvl 75s to go with you.

Depends on your party really. A good party will make a SMN roll thumbs. A poor party might make you work.
I've had way too many good parties where I just felt like I wasn't able to do anything. Mob dies too fast for rages, party doesn't need that 3 STR extra since mobs are already dying fast enough, and all that is left is looking after the melee so they won't die.
I still remember dealing more damage on my main healing SCH than a SMN in the jungle. And I was subbing SMN since I lack RDM and BLM for sub, so I could have done even better.
