So, anyone else who unlocked it for fun?

Because I noticed it wasn't particularly fun at all. Light based magic damage, and it still hoovers around 100-150 damage for me. I pictured it as a staff meteorite for at least 400ish.

Though perhaps it can be boosted fairly high with all the MAB gear SMN actually get. Then again, you need like 100 MAB to push it to 200-300 damage.

I think the "damage multiplier 2x" in the description at wiki must mean it deals about twice the damage of a regular melee hit?

Oh well, another disappointment in the bag of SMN disappointments.

I unlocked this for a friend. About the only real remarkable thing about it is that it has one of the longest player WS animations that I (or my friend) have ever seen. It's rather funny to make killing blows + skillchains with this WS; the mob will sometimes drop dead while the animation is still going, and the subsequent skillchain animation will trigger on their corpse. >_>

I would think it's more for the DEF down effect than anything else, but that can be replicated via several other sources, and you'd probably wanna use Spirit Taker anyway.

I guess the other remarkable thing about it is that it is a staff WS that can create a level 3 skillchain, but is magical and therefore will not ever miss, like BLM's Vidohunir. Can be nice to have if you're helping someone else unlock a WS.

I unlocked it myself, and I use it in Campaign when I'm set for MP, usually on bosses. A no miss Def Down makes everyone hit harder and it certainly looks quite pretty. ^^

I unlocked it when trying to unlock spirit taker. Had my own little mini pt of me, carby and my npc, took me quite a few days solo.....the added benefits ofcourse were that my npc was lvling up and that I was actually getting kindred seals.

unfortunately by the time I unlocked GoB my staff skill was still only 191 T_T so no spirit taker yet and I was too tired of staring at crabs to continue.

Im quite sure I remember doing 200s on EP crabs in kuftal but it rips hate off carby >.o which wasnt helping my staff skill ups (or sublimation) very much.

That's why I stopped melee soloing with Carby, even Spirit Taker was making hate dodgy. I switched to Fenrir up until Garuda matched him for perp and now I almost use her exclusively.

The perp cost kinda really sucked though with the nyzul weapon >.o which is why I was using carby. Its 1mp a tick and ability to cure itself when I accidentally got links made me prefer him over garuda or fenrir.

edit: to clarify, the only times Ive used GoB was after I unlocked it and I had a link or 2 to get through before I left, so I just continued using carby as he was tanking for me already (I did switch to light staff drr)

I actually never stopped using Fenrir even after getting Karura. Reason being that while Garuda has higher spike damage (Pred Claws > Eclipse Bite), Fenrir attacks faster and for the same damage. So if you're leaving the avatar out, rather than BP/release, Fenrir can actually come out ahead of Garuda in terms of damage and sustained enmity in many cases. He doesn't, however, have any self-heal moves like Garuda... so it also depends on what you're fighting. Usually, though, it's just a matter of resummoning Fenrir between each fight and you don't have to worry about healing.

Of course garuda probably attacks very fast too with haste on, but that is if you find enough MP to cover a 100 MP hastega rotation.

I've always felt Whispering Wind was worth the drop in DoT, especially when one wrong TP move or crit hit can mean having to resummon in the middle of a fight.

I unlocked WS'ing with Carby's poison nails. It's a neat WS and can do 300-400 dmg depending on mob.

The interesting thing is that it is enhanced by MAB. So if you equip MAB +20, your WS is enhanced by 20% directly.

It just doesn't seem worth it when the mobs take 120 damage in cape terrigan. 20% on 120 damage is just 24 additional damage.

Btw, wouldn't this WS automatically get 15% damage bonus from HQ elemental staffs? Not that damage 35 or whatever is especially hot.

Garland of Bliss shouldn't proc that low damage unless the mob has Shell or some sort of magic resistance up. It's significantly more damaging than Spirit Taker.

It averages 300-400 and can go higher too. I have +22 MAB equipped.

No, the bonuses from elemental staves are an entirely separate multiplier from MAB.

This is very true. As with almost everything in FFXI, the situation will determine which avatar you choose. I find myself using Garuda in places like Campaign where I really don't want to have to release and resummon. Her ability to heal allows her to tank an entire mob without me having to resummon her. This allows me to melee alongside her without having to worry about hate. If I am more concerned about DOT, then I will use Fenrir.

As for GoB, I was a bit disappointed. I know it's probably just me, but I was really hoping that in addition to being able to make Light with our staff, I hoped that we would finally be able to open Distortion. It is the only SC (lv1-2) we cannot make with our avatars. Somehow SCH got that position on renkei chart, and we know how often SCHs melee! I know it isn't really a big deal, but I would have liked to be able to GoB ---> Double Slap for a nice Distortion. Oh, well.

It was mainly on raptors in Cape Terrigan. But yes, it was probably one or two crabs too, but it still never hit above 150.

On an unrelated note I was really surprised when I could summon fenrir while hit by a EM-T raptor. I used to get interrupted by EP when summoning. Fluke? Or sneak update?

I just unlocked it not too long ago (Finally got my Runic Key). The damage isn't too spectacular, though admittedly I haven't actually macroed any gear in to increase the damage.

It's purdy, though. :D

The best part is that the animation is so long that you have time to run to the kitchen and fix yourself a snack before the animation finishes.

Kind of update. I can smack PLDs with invincible for 75 damage (with MND max gear) in campaign. Not as awesome as I'd hope, but 75 more than other jobs! (Unless they too cheat with magic damage)
