I've had SMN at 37 for the longest time and have been waiting till i get my last 3 HQ staves b4 i even bother going beyond 37.

My question is, what gear is useful for leveling (lol im sure there is a link in the compilation threads, if someone can toss me a few or point my in the right direction that would be helpful)

by what gear i think im mostly looking at
AF vs austere/Penance vs Relic
with some exceptions
YYR and Evoker's Ring

that being said how much of each set is useful and what is just junk that isnt worth the effort.

example is SMN magic skill useful for anything other than Elemental Siphon?

usually when i invite a SMN into a PT (on the off chance one is seeking) its as a Buffer for the PT, the way i see it the SMN can usually throw our Buffs and debuff the mob much in the same way a BRD or COR does.

Some smns seem to take more of a DD approach throwing out PC or Ecplipse Bite every minute. not that Rage is good for much else other than DD?

So what do you guys suggest? Do i turn your stomaches in disgust at my lack of understanding of your job? or Am i just a misguided soul that knows not what he speaks of but is willing to learn? or the 3rd option, am i somewhat right?

Not to be condescending, if you knew where to look, why didn't you look there?

SMN gear is pretty straight forward. You get Austere, AF, and Relic, and you're more or less set. The trick is knowing when to equip each.

Before you BP, equip gear that has -BP Timer. Immediately after, equip the appropriate gear for maximizing BP potential.

Summoning skill does several things for this. On physical BPs, any skill over cap will increase accuracy. Jury's still out on magical, if it affects it at all. Other obvious gear to equip is "Enhances Avatar XXX" or "Pet: XXX".

Skill also affects the duration of Wards. Again any skill over cap increases wards by one second up to a specific cap.

It's affect on Siphon can be simplified as 1 point = 1 MP.

You can see all the affects of skill here, including ward caps and Siphon's exact formula.

As far as a SMN's job in a party...

We're not as good as a BRD or COR, we're not as good as a WAR, we're not as good as a WHM.

But what BRD or COR can't do, we can. What WAR can't do, we can. What WHM can't do, well you get the idea. We even have a few tricks RDM and PUP (the last few jack-of-all-trades) don't have.

It was my experience that SMN was invited for all these things. I had parties running the entire gamut, from WHM+SMN to SMN+BRD to WHM+RDM+SMN. In that last one, I was specifically asked to DD because support and healing was covered and a third DD was unavailable. Not an ideal setup, no, but fun, consistent, and workable.

We're a versatile job, and it depends entirely on what the party is lacking as for what a SMN is invited for. It's unfortunate that 70 or so and above, the gap widens to a point that people won't even consider SMN as a last pick for any role.

Things change somewhat for endgame events.

Well you still have a long ways to go before you actually get any of the fun gear, but:

Elemental Staves are a must. If you can get the HQ ones great but the normal quality ones work just as well. The only HQ ones I have are the light (I don't remember if this is required for free carby) and dark ones, other than that, I don't think it matters a lot if you it's something you just can't afford.

Penance gear is awesome but not worth the price. Again, if you can afford it that's awesome, but don't worry about it if you can only afford Austere. The Austere gear is amazing and you'll still be using pieces of it in your 70's.

Evoker's Ring and Tamas Ring are probably the two best you can get, but there are plenty of alternatives if you can't get either of those.

If you can, get a group together and go on a Carbuncle Mitt's run. It's fun, they're free, and they're essential to soloing. IF you're lucky you'll even find a Light Spirit pact (I lost the lot for the pact when I went on my Mitts run ;_;).

And since you seem to be only concerned with endgame gear, this is a good read.

Also, as far as I'm concerned, this guide concerning +hMP and MP recovery is pretty important to read and understand for any mage job.

If you feel like doing some research on your own, here and here are also good places to start...

yeah i figured i'd draw some flak on the who compilation thing. i did look through a few threads about it most seemed to just list armor that smn could use.

out of that i pulled, AF vs Austere vs Relic

also my other 75s atm at WHM BRD COR BLM when choosing which Elemental Staves to get i took into consideration WHM BLM BRD RDM and SMN (before SCH was out) and decided the best route to go would be
Light (cures, Repose, Banish nukes (lulz), Carby) > Dark (Aspir, Drain, Sleep, Fenny, Diabolos) > Ice (Blizzard, Paralyze, Bind, Shiva?) > Earth (Slow, Stone, Titan, tanking) > Wind (Silence, Aero, Garuda, Gravity) > Thunder (Ramuh, Thunder) > Water (Water, Leviathan) > Fire (Fire, Ifrit)

im at 5/8 so far and i think the HNM shell im in now will help me out with the other 3 so thats always good. I honestly just didnt wanna level the job without them.

As for mage stuff, being a 75 BLM and WHM i know where to build MP and hMP, the question is as a Tarutaru will i really need to build mp all that much on SMN or should i focus on hMP and HP+ instead?

I've seen WHM/SMN tarus at 500 hp i can only imagine how stupidly low you can get a 75 SMN taru's hp with maxed out gear.

I already got Tamas, Evokers shouldn't be too rough, as i can pretty much duo most of the avatars out there.

Thanks for the replies guys im sure ill start this job soon as i get the last 3 HQ staves.

Btw i love the way Nether Blast looks.

I wouldn't say it's so much AF vs Austere vs Relic but more Party vs Solo vs event. As someone said above, SMN's fill so many different roles and the equipment and macro set they bring to each varies depending on what they're doing.

I'm only 72SMN and only started playing again after a 2 year break so take what I say with a grain of salt but you'll probably need to have the useful AF, Austere, Relic, and other equipment on you at all times just to fit any situation.

Be prepared to spend hours fine tuning macro sets for every situation because each one needs an equipment swap at very specific times to get the most out of the insane amount of equipment you'll be carrying.

Also, don't worry too much about +MP gear no matter what race you are. You're switching equipment so much that you rarely get to take full advantage of those pieces. Worry more about how quickly you get MP back and how efficient you can be.

I'm a Mithra with pretty minimal +MP gear (rings, earrings, whatever other equipment gives +MP that I happen to have on) and I do fine. In fact, I'm rarely at full MP and if I am at full MP it's usually a sign that something isn't right.

I've had the worst luck with smn. When folks talk about being versatile I just go blank because no matter where I've been be it exp or event, someone always asks me if I can main heal... Even in sky I had a blm/whm ask me if I could main heal... I have such a chip on my shoulder about it anymore that when a player who is subbing whm asks if I can main heal I just throw the question back at them.

I have been in a few parties that were different, some of them I did well and others I just wondered what the heck smn was even needed for.

It's those situations that really get you thinking about how to use all that gear smn has just to squeeze out a bit more dmg or reduce that bp timer and reduce perpetuation. I've yet to aquire any AF2, or complete CoP so I'm pretty much worthless still. I'm more convinced than ever that smn is truely the last job to take to 75. No real point in lvling it if you dont have all the areas of the game and all the gear.

I see smn's afk all the time with nashira, nirvana, and all the other very best gear. Thats the goal.

What server are you on where you see Summoners (plural) afk wearing Nirvana?
