Hey you guys.
I'm going to level Summoner next I've decided.
I played SMN on my old character and enjoyed it.

Well, I'm going to be levelling it with a friend of mine and it will probably stay level sync'd to a very low level all the way to 75.

I'm not doing that SMN burn thing, but rather my friend likes to stay in Qufim and PL himself. I'll DD with Thunderspark.

Anyways, my summoning magic skill should be at a pretty low level by the time I hit 75.

I'm wondering how much this skill level will cripple my SMN?
I think back when I played Summoner before ToAU summoning skill was actually useless.

Also, how difficult will it be to max my summoning magic from very low levels to max at 75?

My friend once told me he skilled up summoning magic by making a long macro in Windower and going AFK.
Is this still possible, or even a good idea?

I know you can skill up on BPs now so I don't really now how hard it will be.

higher the smn skill the greater the elemental siphon.

and..some other stuff having to do with math and your bloodpacts that I never paid attention to.

summoning skill is a biotch to lvl either way. I solo'd my smn for the most part on bombs and some imps, when I dinged 75 my smn skill was still not capped...its currently still not capped.

If you manage to get to 75 with a smn skill of 20 then I dont envy you attempting to skill it.

Just spend a little while between sessions running up the skill. (Like, say, 15-20 minutes.) You won't be nearly as far behind as a result (though yes, you will still be behind).

The main things having low summoning skill hurts are 1) elemental siphon, which is just flat out AMAZING when you get high skill, and 2) buff duration, most notably haste.

It isn't difficult to max summoning skill as long as you're making offensive actions against enemies. Sitting around summoning all day with windower macros is wildly inefficient. You're looking at one skillup every 20 summons, at best. Plus there's always the chance of someone calling a GM on you for botting when you're AFK. Bad news.

What I used to do was use Diabolos's Somnolence on high level enemies near zone lines. Somnolence deals magic damage so it can't miss and the gravity lands often even with low skill, giving you time to escape. I got .5 skillups about half the time doing this and it was completely safe. Boring, sure, but the results added up in a hurry.

If you never skilled up your summoning magic, you'd be exactly as good as someone who is exactly at cap when you blood pact.

Siphon aside, it's only over cap that we improve. However, if you want to do your summoner any justice at all, you'll want to reach for that. So, it's not crippling. You'll be average, and you'll stay average a long time until you cap; but you'll easily be functional, to say the least. Just don't take that as an open ticket to be lazy.

Just remember SMN is a T-VT fighting job. Don't make the dumb mistake to sync and fight IT++ on SMN. (Worms might work, but don't try crabs and such)

If you want to prot/shell iv anyone with light spirit it's also more difficult with low summoning magic skill (as per longer spell timer on light spirit)
