Attention! A Few things.. you *Might* have missed for the level 20 avatar battles... <-,<-;; WORKS WITH ANY RACE! ^^v
1) Lightsday is perhaps the *best* day to fight an avatar.
Take them on their "Weak" day if Lightsday is too far away.
>> I have noticed Carbuncle is ever so slightly stronger this day, doing about 1-2 more damage per hit (for these fights, Everything adds up) As for his Astral flow, it is less likely to be resisted (aka 240~ dmg is his full attack at lvl 20 with Searing Light, 120~ is the "resisted" version of the attack..)
Waiting the extra 1-6 hours for the right in-game day.. is Worth it, it may be the difference between your Victory and your Defeat.. :/ Choose wisely.
2) Astral Flow DOES require MP- follow the equation.
>> Astral Flow to work = [(Your LVL)x2]+4
Which means.. at the point of using Searing Light for these battles, you need 44MP. (Yagudo drinks are awesome, but have an ether Just In Case)
3) Don't Sub White Mage. Just Don't.
>> Whoopdee doo, if you need to heal, use a Hi Potion, Not a weak Cure1... v.v Now- let me tell you what you Should sub..
4) SUB . . . NINJA.
>> Don't say "zomg, I need Utsusemi it won't work TARD.." Listen, at lvl 20 you don't get to equip a shield with a summoner, why not instead, equip 2 clubs. Don't think "hmm, 2 int+ clubs might be a nice approach..." think: "50% chance spell being interrupted when hit!" And this is just the beginning..
5) Get SMN To lvl 25 preferably, Blood Pact with Garuda for >> Blink before entering the crystal (you can do it in the room while standing before the mighty proto-crystal)
*Not necessary, but sure helps.
6) Cap your summoning magic.
>> I'm tired of people posting that they don't know if it actually helps or not- the observations I have made make summoning magic skill seem Imperative to being any sort of DD with your summoner- for Searing Light to do its 240~ "maximum" damage, you Need summoning magic skill, it will have a very high chance of being "resisted" and only doing 120~ damage at low summoning magic.
7) Equipment:
Hands: Dual Wield Two "Hermit Wand"s This will make your spell interruption 50%. Wow. Just.. wow. Aquaviel is for losers.
Belt: Obi +1. There are two to choose from, the lvl 20 one is simply one more defense. This cuts down spell interruption by another whopping 8%. Every bit helps.
Rings: For Everyone But Ifrit.. use Bomb Ring and either San d'Orian Ring, Leather Ring+1, or Safeguard Ring. +2 Defense per ring helps. (For Ifrit, natually equip another Def+ Ring)
Head: Cat-eye Circlet (+5 Evasion / 4 Def.) - we're going for evasion here as well :/
Feet: Light Soleas (+3 Evasion) ^^
Earrings: Physical Earrings (-25 MP +25 HP each)
Body: Garrison Tunica or Priest's Robes Defense on these.
Legs: Black Pants lvl 20, most defense you can get.
Back: The most Defense you can afford, lvl 10 3 defense +1 mnd is a nice choice.. can't think of its name right now :3
Hands: Scentless Armlets (+5 more evasion..)
(Carbuncle Mitts if you got them.. v.v Lucky if you Do!)
8) Other things you should know:
>> Cap your club skill, and at the beginning of battle go up there and melee with Carbuncle, until Garuda's shadows drop, or you resummon carby after Thunderspark -Ramuh-, don't use your Astral Flow until then, at that point or at the beginning with any other avatar, go in this Easy A-B-C order..
A- Astral Flow
B- Blow a Searing Light
C- Chug down a Yagudo Drink
D- Dent that avatars face with your clubs
E- Evade their attacks while resummoning Carbuncle
(If you get hit, remember you now have 58% chance to NOT BE INTERRUPTED! O_O "Amazing" to say the least!
Items to have on hand:
>1-2 Ethers (if you cast carbuncle 6 times between Searing Lights... -which you shouldn't if you are there meleeing as well- You will need the 44MP for Searing Light to work a 2nd or 3rd time..)
>4-5 Hi Potions (Be prepared to tank a bit, but this guide I invented and created out of MANY failed attempts with SMN/WHM approach.. Pays off in the long run.. you will be 100% victorious each time.) Only use them when you are below 60-65%HP or in the yellow, Use one IMMEDIATLY when you see the avatar is preparing their "astral flow" Often on Lightsday their attack

http://eyesonff.com/ff11/summoning.shtml >1 Boiled Crab (lasts 30 minutes I believe, is Very useful, raises defense so that when you do take damage, the only damage you really take is the Elemental damage- which Can be reduced greatly by having a WHM friend use Bar_(element-here)_a before each battle..
>1 Yagudo drink Should suffice the entire battle is under 5 minutes for a summoner following this guide.. in fact, it should honestly be under four minutes for preperation, and 3 Searing Lights within 1 minute of each other during the Astral Flow.. Remember, you're not running around like a sissy-sub-whm going "omg-omg-omg!" you are Meleeing with Carbuncle.

(All on the same day, each time it felt Alot easier... didn't beat any records, cause I was taking my time just whacking some of them to death XD My physical damage and TP moves did about 1/3 the damage, and for Leviathan I didn't choose to use Searing Light a 3rd time, I chose to finish him off with a whopping 58dmg Shining Strike! XD)
