I can confirm that logging off with Astral Flow in effect will reset your 2hr but you will keep the effect for whatever time still remained on the clock.

I did this last night. I showed someone my Ifrit Inferno then I logged out. Today I logged in and still had Astral Flow available. I then checked my 2hr and it was at 0:00.

I guess this still works. Funny how I just saw this last night.

Not sure what this was in response to, i need to go back and look but yes. 2hour is 2hours for any 2 hour ability.

If you use your 2 hour and log out, wait 2 real life hours and log in, it will be available. If you use it and log out, come back an hour later, you will still have 1 hour left before you can use it again. Using your 2 hour and logging out and waiting 2 mins will not reset your 2 hour back to 0 though. ^^

EDIT:

Quote:
Thiefcat:

I seem to recall an old post about somebody using Astral Flow then IMMEDIATELY logging off.

Two hours later, (s)he logs back in and the previous Astral Flow was still in effect AND (s)he can use it again.

Has this been patched? Or, can I rely on this? So, when I want to do the Avatar battles, I'll Astral Flow two hours(Vana'diel Days) before Lightsday and log off. After 2 hours, log back in, quickly get into the battle arena and hopefully get to do 1 Searing Light before the Astral Flow(activated two hours ago) wears off.

Your two hour ability will only last for 3 mins with a 2 hour reset time. So if you use Astral Flow and do two searing lights, then log out. When you come back 5 mins later, astral flow will be gone and you will have to wait 1hour and 50 mins (roughly) before being able to activate Astral Flow again.

Fame level:
level 1 fame -->0-10 quest
level 2 fame -->10-20 quest
level 3 fame -->20-30 quest
level 4 fame -->30-50 quest
level 5 fame -->50-70 quest
level 6 fame -->70-90 quest
level 7 fame -->90-110 quest
level 8 fame -->110-140 quest
level 9 fame -->1400+ quest

this are the number of quest that need to be done to raise fame. repeated quest still raise fame and i believe that it raises it faster do a repeated quest for a npc and your fame will go up faster, as i only did about repeated quest in sandy and i got fame level 2. But in bastok i need 9 non repeated quest and i still didn't get fame level 2, so is up to you to choose.

Great guide! I plan on trying these out soon...

About the ongoing debate about whether lvl 2 or lvl 3 Fame... I have a comment..
Perhaps it also takes into consideration other fame such as in Selbina or Kazham etc?
Like maybe in Sandy etc, you have lvl 2 fame, but also have fame in the other cities?
And the poster(s) that claim that you do in fact need lvl 3 Fame, perhaps they have lower or no fame in the other cities?

Just a thought. /shrug

No more Fame discussions.....lol

Seriously, untill SE releases information specifically stating how fame is counted and such, it will remain a debate. The only thing I got out of the whole fame debate was maybe there differences in how much level fame 2 you have. Using the above post as an example.

Fame 2 (10-20 quests)
If you do 10 quests maybe you actually have something like fame 2.1 and if you do 19 quests maybe you have fame 2.8. Then maybe fame 2.8 will allow you to aquire the avatar quest where maybe fame 2.1 will not.

This is all hypothetical and the numbers are just examples, but other then the above (if it were true), I know that Fame 2 will get you the quest.

It takes 20 quests to get level 2 Fame, plain and Simple... assuming you have no other prior fame in the Area

It does not take 20 quests plain and simple to get fame 2!!!!

I only did 2 quests and 8 treant bulb quests and I received fame 2 in Bastok...so therefore

IT DOES NOT take 20 quests.

Hello guys,
I just defeated Ifrit tonight, right before the Fireday came up...so anyways, I defeated him and received Warp Scroll..so Do i have to touch the Crystal again to get any key item, or just warp back to the NPCs to receive the reward? (-.-)

This is such a great guide I just had to BUMP it. Thanks to a lot of Theifcat's advice (and a little of my own luck) I have all the Avatatrs except Fenrir.

Keep up the good work Theifcat

I've gotten Shiva so far...

Now I'm 0-3 on Titan. Last night.. his first attack (before Carby even engaged) stunned both Carby and I. I should have waited to cast SL... but didn't realize I was stunned. So, I got to the bottom... realized I had 15 seconds left and ran for the top to cast Carby again. As soon as Carby was summoned... he got Stone IIed.

I called 'defeat' and let Titan beat me down instead of wasting any more potions..

Thiefcat u rock! thankyou so much for the guide. One bit of personal advise on a problem i ran into. Some of the skills the avatars use can interrupted carby's Searing Light so if u can, id wait until they have used what skill the will and then use searing light. just some advise cuz this happened a few times to me ^_^ good luck everyone!

I have level 0 (thats ZERO) Tenshodo/norg fame (npc in norg gives me the 3 line essay on building trust because ive done NO norg fame quests. As long as i use a SUMMONER with at least lvl 20 as my MAIN JOB, I get the leviathan mini fork quest. I fought all the avatars without doing fame quests first. I have dragged new summoners kicking and screaming to norg who dont have any fame just to see if they could get it with no fame and so far every single one of them has, and further have confirmed for me that 0 fame gets them the ramuh battle (windy fame) in mhaura, and the Shiva battle in sandy as well. Now unfortunately you have to do at least kazham keys quests to get ifrit quest (windy- kazham fame) so its not definitely 0.0 fame there... but go off and try it for yourself and see. Make SURE you have your main job as summoner and that youre above lvl 20 and go try the npc for the quest. I'm fairly sure that despite the popular opinion that the lvl 20 battles are all ZERO fame.

Just Curious.

Why don't we follow Thiefcat's guide but start every fight like when we fight Ramuh? That way Carby can melee 1 round before we Fire 3 SL which will increase the chance that avatar will die in the 3rd SL.

Now I have a question. Will carby hit harder & have more defense when AF is activated? If yes then It's worth it to use the AF&logout strategy.

Thank you ^_^

all in all though you did a great job with your guide, and i must say that without your guidance i could have never gotten the avatars so fast. thanks man!!

I had to chime in on this guide. I decided to do Summoner kinda as a side thing. I was working on some other adv. jobs when I said why not and started fighting leeches, eventually getting my ruby. Then I began to process of leveling up, just to get to level 20 and get the avatars.

As of now I am 1 avatar away from completing my task. My first fight I tried the 3SL method on the Summoner info site. Well I panicked and lost to Shiva, I forgot to do something dumb like drink an Ether.

Then I saw the video posted with the 2SL method. I fought Titan, Garuda, and Ramuh and lost. 2 hours later I take down Ifrit and Shiva and Titan soon follow. Then I was stuck for a couple of days, the 2SL method wasn't working as the 2 hours kept killing me.

Then I read this guide, although I'm not sure how I missed it. This morning I fought Leviathan using this method, smooth as a baby's bottom. Then this afternoon I fought Ramuh, starting casting at the crack (I had been at the bend and Assualting). Thunderspark went off right away and Paralyzes me, fortunately Carbuncle popped out and started meleeing. I run down to the crystal, thinking I should wait. Carby dies and I start casting, then realizing I need paralyna. Fails once, start mashing Carby, paralyze wears off in the middle Ramuh starts wailing away but Carby comes right on out. I fire off my Searing Light and run like ****. To make a long story short, I get the second SL off, Ramuh hits me with Thunder II, I get rthe second SL off down a hi-potion, I see Ramuh ready Judgement Bolt, the reason he beat me twice before... it does 160, I down another potion, cast Carby, fire SL, D-E-A-D. /cheer

For me what made the biggest difference was equipment. I had whm as a sub, and let me tell you this equipment is almost right on and cost me a fraction of what I had already spent on lost battles. Buy the equipment, get your HP up as high as possible. My HP was around 300 allowing me more time to use that hi-potion or cast another Carbuncle.

GREAT guide! What has been said is spot on, and for the record, my fame was "2" for all battles.

Thank you for this post.
Thanks to you, I just got Ifrit, Shiva and Titan. Also, I broke the record on Shiva, and Titan on my server. Three minutes 51 seconds on Shiva, four minutes and 1 second on Titan. The whole thing with "The Crack" is perfect, I didn't even get slept by Shiva at all. Now I'm off to get my next three.
Once again,
Thank You!

Just a bump and a thumbs-up for this guide. I hit SMN 20 on Friday, got Shiva and Ifrit Friday night, then Garuda, Leviathan and Titan on Saturday (but lost to Ramuh.) Lost to Ramuh again on Sunday. (D'oh!) Finally beat Ramuh on Monday.

I had the most trouble with Ramuh-- he's a tough nut to crack. I was only able to get 2 SLs off, but I still managed to finish him off with just plain ol'Carby. (And the help of Yag Drinks and Mulsum.)

Also recommended-- au Laits. If you can get a friend to make one, I love Persikos au Lait. Expensive, but it lasts as long as any fight should, and for a Taru (like my main, Drix), regen is worth it.

Congratz on the great post/guide!

While leveling my SMN I read through your guide a couple times to help prepare for the upcomming battles. Needless to say, I found the information extremely helpful. *thumbs up* I recorded the battles I did today using fraps, as soon as I can find a decent free webhost, Ill post a link to the movies. I was originaly going to fight Ifrit first, but got held up and couldnt fight during watersday. So instead I took on Shiva first, then Ramuh; I won both times with ease^^

I HATE LAG SO FREAKIN MUCH!!!

let me explain. i went and took titan for my first avatar and i beat him on the first try. i waited the two hours and then headed to norg to do leviathan. i got off the first searing light and began running back to the crystal. about have way there, i discovered that i was lagging out. i ran all the way back to the crystal and waited. my connection fixed itself and when it did, i was sprawled face first on the ground!!!!!

i'm now gonna wait two hours and then try to get garuda. if i can avoid the lag, then i should have a very good chance of winning. oh well, onward and upward to the next :)!

Thanks for this guide, it's very helpful.

I'm having a frustrating problem with Titan though and I'm seriously about to lose my freakin mind.

I've fought the stupid guy for 3 times and he keeps binding me at the beginning of the battle. So then my astral flow gets all messed up. Okay, so I run up and cast carby for the first time, astral flow - SL. He binds me. By the time I can run off carby is dead so I have to recast right there. After that I run back to the crystal, but Titan is still following me. Carby dies, I recast and run off. Carby and Titan fight for a bit and then RIGHT before Carby dies, like one hit before he's gone, the stupid dumb #@*& turns around and already starts walking up the path for me. So then he gets up to me and Carby catches up to him. He pummels Carby and I try to recast but he's beating the crap out of me, Astral Flow is gone by now and I'm preparing to gnaw on rock.

This is REALLY starting to *tries to take a deep breath* Okay this is really really angering me and I'm by no means rich and I'm sick of wasting my money. What do I do. Someone please help me. I don't have the patience for this. -_-

Hmm... I'm assuming you're buffed up all the way-- Prot/Shell/Barstonra, fighting on Windsday. Maybe have a bunch of +MND gear floating around so you can switch to it to reduce the Bind duration?

I didn't have any problems with Titan, but then again, I tried very hard not to get hate from him. I dragged carby out first and let him get all the hate. You might try waiting a round or two to use your Astral Flow/Searing Light, just in case.

Or better yet, try some of the other avatar battles first, just to avoid frustration. Once you get one of them down, you might feel a bit better about the whole thing.

Yeah, I probably should've mentioned that I'm using all the buffs I can and doing it on Windsday.

I've fought both Shiva and Ifrit using this methond and I had no problem at all. Got them both on the first try. I've also tried Ramuh, but had problems casting paralyna on myself. Not enough fame for Leviathan or Garuda yet.

I don't know what's going on. I wish I knew why he's doing this to me. I try to do everything I can to keep the hate off me. I'm going to try to fight him again in about 15 minutes. -_-

Does anyone know if there's any specific action that will trigger him to do this to me?

A little update from me, yesterday I finally got all the solo battles finished, didnt die once whoot, go me lol. Lunar, I wish I had some advice from you, but I never had a problem with bind during Titan so I guess I am lucky, or he really just hates you. Maybe thiefcat or another smn who has had the same experience can offer help. Good luck!

I think he hates me, lol. I just went in for him again and the same thing happened.

This time I was going to wait and use Astral Flow until after the bind had worn off. I was thinking that maybe I could pull it off like you have to do with Shockstrike and Ramuh. Well, by the time I was unbound Carby was dead and I was trying to recast while being smacked around. Got interrupted a few times and then finally pulled it off. I waited until Carby had pretty good hate and then 2hrd-SL and ran down to the crystal. Then I try to continue like a normal battle but I noticed my yag drink had worn off. I didn't have any more on me. ;_; I don't think having one would've helped anyway. So I used an Ether and Hi-Ether. Summoned Carby and SL'ed again. Ran to the nest. I only had one ether left so I used it. Carby dies, I resummon and Titan comes again. Astral Flow is gone so my only choice is to beat him with my stick. So Carby and I just melee. For a minute there I thought I might win. I think if I would've had a couple more potions then it would've happened, but I only had 2 on me and I had already used them.

It was messy. I'm sick of doing this. I'm wasting so much freaking money. I hate Titan.

Nice guide. I haven't done Ramuh yet, I don't have enough fame, but i'm hoping to do him sometime soon, although that might not end up happening until my WHM hits 51 (i'm taking a break and levelling other things then.)

My scores with them are in my sig.

Does anyone know what they say for lvl 2 fame in Norg? And does trading the 4 yag necklaces to the cat burglar raise Tenshyodo and Windy fame?
I have traded so many yag Necklaces that its making me ill...
And the guy in Norg said he knows my name now but I still cant get the Leviathen Quest. So maybe I just reached fame lvl 1 there.
Leviathen is the last avatar I have to get besides Fenrir.But I need the fame and you guys seem to know alot about fame.

Since I haven't got to SMN20 yet, I'm very curious if subbing THF for mini-avatar fights will help more. You don't need the extra MP and I don't think the extra MND matters that much. What seems to matter most is to be able to summon Carbuncle. Wouldn't subbing THF give you higher evasion and hence better chance for the avatar to miss so translates to better chance of summoning Carbuncle when under fire? They might even miss with their 2-Hr? Having buffs might be nice but wouldn't avoid getting hit in the first place be even better? Of course, with some avatar like Ramuh, WHM sub would be better because of Paralyna. But THF10 will probably not make enough difference with evasion and HP/defense. Just curious.

Are you doing the cabbage/moss/corn runs to Selbina as well? This quest reduces your Norg fame.

You're right about the lvl 2 fame. I did the selbina quest to raise my fame in multiple places. My fame is 2 in san d'oria. I fought against [and lost to] Shiva. So, you can in fact fight the avatars at fame lvl 2. I dont know what he was talking about "this has been well established."

i keep losing to ifrit >< i brought 5 Hi-potions and Ethers 2 yag drinks and a boiled crab (summon skill = 40). i bought shield earing and rings that give me +fire elemental resistence. i wait on my buffs and usually i get protect and shell 3 or 4, plus barfira if im lucky. everything works great until i get to the second carby summon. i'll summon, carby will intercept near the crystal while i SL and run. but i only get half way there before carby dies! i emediatly stop and summon followed by and ether, but either...

a) ifrit will reach me first and inturupt my casting (even with a hermit wand and aquaveil). when this happens i dont move and try to recast carby while keeping my hp up with my remaining hi-potions (which hasnt worked yet...)

~or~

b) ifrit will 2Hr me or use Fire II on carbuncle, killing him instantly. when this happens i do the exact same thing as in (a) i stay calm, stand there and try to cast.

does anyone have any pointers?

mind if i add a few things?
I scanned and didnt see most of these ideas. but I mighta over looked em. Here is how I did it.
Physical Earing X2: Convert 25 MP to HP.
Wild Cudgel: +20 HP -20 MP
Priests Robe: 14 Def.
Bonze's Circlet: 7 Def and a few MP
Light Solea: Evasion Bonus
Friars Rope: 2 Def +5 MP
Scentless Armlets: Evasion bonus
Black Silk Neckerchief: 2 Def.
Mist Silk Cape: 3 Def
And a subbed MNK. Wich made a huge difference!
4 Hi-Potions
3 Hi-Ethers (cheaper then Ethers)
1 Boiled Crab
3 Yagudo Drinks.
Protect 3 Shell 2

I was lvl 30 when i started these battles because i leveled SMN for sub with static so i didnt stress Avatars yet. Now i have em and am happy, and being level 30, i am able to use Aerial Armor before i go in, wich really helps too. I wish you all the best of luck on this. Have fun and enjoy Summoner!!!

It always happens after my second SL. kills carby and takes my hp into the red...after that...its over.the 3 SL method worked great for titan shiva and ifrit...but i cant make it work for rumah or garuda. dont know what im doing wrong....guess ill just try and try again. gotta win sometime...just getting sick of spending soo much gil on all the items.otherwise....great walkthrough.

Just a helpful hint to some people trying to get the quests that can't. I found out you do have to have summoner equip to get the battle. I ran to Norg with my lvl 50+ RDM, and forgot to change. Wouldn't give me the quest, so I checked fame. It was at the lvl 2 rating, so I thought I needed more. Went back to windy, did more necklaces. Went back to Norg, same thing, and fame was still the same. Then I thought, "wait... maybe you have to have summoner equip.". Turns out, that was the case. Hope this helps.

I highly recommend bringing a Panama Au Lait. If you do the battles like this guide says, they should all only take 3-4 minutes to complete. Panama Au Lait outlasted everyone of my battles. I'm pretty sure they last 5 minutes. After I started using it, I only used 1 hi-potion out of 4 battles. Definitely worth trying. The only items you should need to use if done correctly are 1 Yagudo Drink, 1 Panama Au Lait, 1 Hi-potion, 2 Ethers, and 1 Boiled Crab meat. Of course its better to go in with more for those "Just in case" scenarios.

Also, I don't know about other servers, but there was a rumor floating around on mine when I was doing battles that S.E. no longer allowed you to get high lvl Protect/Shell on battles. This is completely false, I had Protect III and Shell III for my last 3 battles.

One last thing I noted... Lightsday is a great day to fight any avatar. You are guarranteed a 200+ damage SL on all 3. I lost a battle to Ramuh on his weakday cause Searing Light only hit for 50 damage.

Thanks again Thiefcat. Love my Avatars! XD

Hey Thiefcat-

Lost to Leviathan twice in a row after going 5/6 on other avatar battles- I got titan 1/2, and all the others on the first try. This time, Leviathan cast his 2 hr and prevented my third SL from going off. How do you suggest I go about fighting Leviathan any differently than the other battles? I've tried both the standard technique and the Ramuh technique with waiting on SL til second time carby attacks. Thanks!

Ok I just fought Shiva..I would have won but sadly I had my Macros spelled wrong. A usefull hint is CHECK ALL YOUR MACRO'S for misspelled words and all that stuff.
What happened was I spelled HI-Potion --> High Potion and misspelled Yagudo.
I was doing very well in the battle until I needed to use my Hi-potion and the macro didnt work. All that I needed was to cast Banish, then Shiva would have been mine on the first try.
I am very grateful for this Forum and I followed it step by step. Thank You so much for all of this Usefull information.

A helpful hint to everyone planning on useing macros for these battles would be to triple check your macro's and make sure that everything is spelled correctly and in it's proper place.
Goodluck I hope that I save someone else the trouble of dieing from a misspelled word in their macro.
Thanks again

Thanks for this guide, and others posted. I'm Galkan (I have taken alot of crap from ignorant ppl, so save it) with astral rings and other +mp gear. I tried Shiva at lvl 18 (yes, a deathwish, or as I like to call it, reconnaisance) and I did not have Summoner Magic capped (it was at 54). I went into the fight and had on me a boiled crab, 3 ethers, 3 hi-potions, 4 potions and 4 yagudo drinks. I did the usual strategy, and was crapping my pants with the real small damage carby gave out. I knew he wasn't going to be tough, so contrary to other guides, I kept MP gear on and hermit's wand. Let me tell you, I just said ***** it, hit astral flow and used the 3 Searing Light Strategy. I beat her with that strategy, on Firesday. I wasn't smooth like some ppl in the videos and had to take some hits and use three hi-potions, but Im glad now that I tried and cant wait to get all avatars ('cept fenrir) to bring to the dunes for lvls 18-20. Try em out before hitting 20, and you'll impress your LS!

Well, I've lost to Ramuh, Ifrit and Garuda now, but man has it been close. Haven't tried banish yet, but I'm going to now, before the update. This needs a STICKY, its a great guide. My first SL on Garuda hit for 51 ><. With Ifrit the SL wouldn't go off before carby died. Ugh, I know odds are I will lose but I'm just keeping at it until i get em. Thanks for this thread Thief.

Thanks for the guide, Thiefcat, I've started collecting my avatars with more success now :)

If I can just stress, do not move when activating Searing Light, wait until carby is in the air after activating it and then run because I didn't realise that moving around would cancel Searing Light. (doh).

Also, due to this guide, I managed to set a new record time on Hades for Ramuh (a paltry 6 mins 54 seconds lol). So if you're on Hades, and see that time in the Trial Size Trial by Lighting in Mhaura, remember this thread and gives thanks to Thiefcat :)

Not really sure what to say here, so I'm going to just blatantly parrot everyone else and say "Thanks for the guide" ^^ Currently, I've only tried one avatar fight (Leviathan) so far, and got my **** handed to me; Leviathan did his 2hr, I didn't run far enough away and my HP went into the orange, I fxxked up and spammed my Hi-Potion macro instead of trying to recast Carby like I SHOULD have, and got slapped down :/ Currently waiting for Waterday so I can take a shot at Ifrit, but I think this guide will be a big help ^^

Anyway, the {tool}{Summoner} is shutting up now
