Hope it helps.

This is completely out of nowhere, and I have no desire to raise the argument again, but...

Did it occur to anyone that quests requiring fame might not analyse your fame in the same discrete chunks it takes to raise a fame 'level'? People refer to fame levels as if they're set in stone, but the message that the Fame Checker NPC gives you is just something to refer to, to see if you are under or above a certain level. This may have been discussed, disproven and dismissed a while ago, and if so I'm sorry... But it occurs to me that this is a very good explanation for how two people could both be so sure.

Assuming this is true, that the fame marker for getting the quest is in fact somewhere between the fame amounts assigned to the minimum needed to check as level 2 and the minimum needed to check as level 3:

One of you has checked as soon as reaching level 2, (perhaps not intentionally) but still not going over the amount needed for the quest, and as such has proceeded to the amount needed for level 3.
The other has had level 2 fame for a bit, or has done a fair few quests without checking in between, thereby going past the level 2 fame limit, and carrying on to reach the amount needed for the quest.

Forgive me for wasting your time if I'm wrong, and also for going into such detail explaining, but I thought I'd make myself clear ^_^

Hey Yalka,

Hope you beat Ramuh =)

Well the fame levels are set in stone. There are specific things that the NPC will tell you in each town which directly relates to your fame level and never changes from person to person. They are as follows:

Windurst
(fame check NPC: windurst waters F-10 - Zabirego-Hajigo)
1) Cyndane? Hmm... Sorry, but I never heard that name before.
2) Cyndane? Hmm... Now, was that the name of the...? No, that was some other lady.
3) Oh, you're the Squink that people are starting to talk about. I've heard pretty good things about you.
4) Why, if it isn't Squink! I heard some guys talking about you over their dinners at the eatery last night. They had nothing but good things to say about you. Keep up the good work!
5) Hello there, Squink! There aren't many Windurstians who don't know that name. We're all proud to have you on our side! Keep up the great work!
6) Mister Squink! You'd have to be living in a hole somewhere not to have heard that name. All the bards in the land are singing songs of your outstanding deeds. Keep up the extraordinary work!
7) Miss Cyndane! There isn't a soul in all of Windurst that has yet to hear the tales of your feats. Why, I remember when you were just a fledgling adventurer. It seems like just yesterday...
8) A day doesn't go by when I fail to hear a tale of your deeds. I am proud to be a citizen of the same great country as Lady Cyndane. Keep up the marvelous work!
9) Lady Cyndane! I am honored to have the hero of Windurst in my presence. Every man and woman in the country knows by heart the tales of your courage. May the Goddess shine her light of grace upon you.

Bastok
(fame check NPC: port bastok E-6 - Flaco)
1) Squink? What is that, some kind of snail? Oh, that's your name. You must be a rookie adventurer, right?
2) Squink? Hmm...sounds familiar. Who was it again? Oh. Well uh...not many people know who you are, but if you work hard enough, word will get around about your good deeds.
3) Ah, Neyelo, I've heard of you. Just keep up the hard work and more people will get to know you.
4) Oh, you're Squink. Yeah, I've heard of you. You're not doing too bad for an adventurer. Keep working hard, and the people of Bastok will come to recognize your efforts.
5) Hello there, Squink. Quite a few people are talking about the things you've done for Bastok. People are starting to talk about you. Keep on doing whatever you're doing!
6) Hello there Squink. A lot of people know what you've done for Bastok. People are saying good things about you. Keep up the good work!
7) Most everyone in this country knows your name by now, Truk! People are saying great things about you. You don't know how proud that makes me feel-Ive been following your progress ever since you came to bastok.
8) You must be Truk. Don't look so surpised, as everyone knows your name and what you've done for Bastok. Truk, we're very proud to have someone like you as a Bastoker.
9) Master Truk! You are a hero to the people of Bastok! Everyone here knows your name and what you've done for us!You are the example every Bastoker should follow!

Sandoria
(fame check NPC: south sandoria K-6 - Namonutice)
1) Hmm... Xeu, you say? No, never heard that name. Do not expect me to learn the name of every recruit! Do good for the kingdom and her people, and they shall come to know you. Once you have their trust, they will request your help more readily. Just keep your head down, and your day shall come.
2) Bahanahab...? Hmm... I might have heard that name before. Then again, maybe not. You are not famous yet. Keep your nose to the grindstone and work for the people. Soon, they will know you better!
3) Ah, Bahanahab. That is a name I often hear. People speak well of you! Your deeds for the kingdom have earned you much honor.
4) Squink! You have become well known in these parts! I hear much of your accomplishments. Keep up the good work, and greatness lies in your future.
5) Ah, Squink! You are famous in our kingdom! Of you no ill is spoke. Give to the kingdom and she will give to you, no?
6) Somnar! I would venture that much the kingdom has heard your name! And your reputation sparkles. Indeed I am proud of you. And to think I first knew you when you were a new recruit!
7) Hello, Somnar. Practically all of the kingdom has heard of you now. What's more, your reputation is stellar. I look forward to even greater things from you!
8) Somnar! People are talking about you! Every infant in his cradle knows your name! And they hold you in highest regard! I am so proud of you! May your kind deeds continue!
9) Sir Somnar! There isn't a soul in the kingdom that doesn't consider you a hero! As a representative of the people of San d'Oria, I humbly ask you to continue your efforts for the good of the country. May the light of the Goddess shine upon you!

Jeuno
(fame check NPC: lower jeuno H-8 - Mendi)
1) Rundi, eh? Hmm... That name is vaguely familiar... But I'm afraid few in this town have heard of you. Just keep working at it. You'll make a name for yourself eventually.
2) Oh, so you're Ruuk...Yes, I heard some travelers in a tavern talk about you. It seems you've a fair reputation.
3) Squink! You have become well known in these parts! I hear much of your accomplishments. Keep up the good work, and greatness lies in your future.
4) Hello, Truk! I hear your name mentioned quite often these days. You've done well, my friend. Keep at it.
5) Hello, Truk! A good deal of people here in Jeuno know about you! and they all say you're quite the do-gooder! Thank you for serving our fair city. Keep up the good work!
6) Why, it's Squink! Your growing reputation precedes you. We hope your already substantial contributions to our humble city will continue to grow with time.
7) Why, hello, Kodimus. I say, literally everyone in Jeuno knows your name. It is my pleasure to inform you how impressed we are with your service to Jeuno. We hope to see more of your commendable generosity in the future!
8) Lord Squink! To all citizens here, your name is synonymous with courage and sacrifice. Not a day goes by without hearing of your saintlike service to Jeuno. I speak for all of Jeuno when I express my sincerest appreciation for your generosity. Indeed, bards shall sing of your virtues for ages to come!
9) You have emerged as a hero to the people of Jeuno. Just the sound of your name strikes courage into their hearts. As a representative of its citizens, I humbly ask you to continue your efforts for the good of the duchy.

So there is an EXACT way to tell if what fame level you have. It does not waver from these sayings nor can you have a different lvl of "Fame 2". Your either Fame 2 or your not.

Hey Thiefcat,

Not had a chance against Ramuh yet, beat Ifrit, Garuda and Shiva in a row, then ran out of money ;_;

I'm not sure if you completely understood me. I know that the fame levels are specific to a certain amount of fame, I know that the NPCs in the different Cities all change their comments at the same amount.. But what I'm trying to put across is:

Let's say that your character's fame in each place is stored as a number. This number, we will assume, refers to a number of fame 'units' you have. So for example you might get 15 units for finishing a certain quest, or whatever.

Assume you need 100 Units or more to have reached fame level 2.

Now also assume you need 200 Units or more to have reached fame level 3.

What you two are arguing about is this: You think that you need 100 Units or more of fame (i.e. Level 2) to get the quests. The other poster thinks that you need 200 Units (i.e. Level 3) to get the quests. What I am suggesting is that perhaps you need something like 150 Units of fame. Somewhere in between the two. The argument could have arisen as follows:

You got to Level 2, and went a fair bit over the 100 Unit marker, to, say, 160 Units. You can therefore get the quest. However, you still check as having level 2 fame.

The other poster got to Level 2, but only just, and had, say, 130 Units when they checked as Level 2. Therefore they could not get the quest, and continued until they checked as Level 3.

Hope that makes it a bit clearer, and sorry once again if this has already been suggested, then disproven and dismissed.

Thanks again for all your help Thiefcat ^^

Yalka,

Now I understand what your talking about but Fame rankings don't work like that.

You are either Fame 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,or 9. There is no higher level 2.1, 2.2, 2.3, etc etc. The quests are not based on your "Level" of Fame 2, its just whether or not your Fame 2.

:-)

Congratulations on your new pets. Good luck with Ramuh, if you need help let me know.

Uh, this is something that I really, really wish I knew before fighting Ramuh, and I suggest everyone takes it into consideration:

Go there with MORE items than you need. I went in to fight Ramuh with two Hi-Potions, two Ethers, two Yagudo Drinks, one Boiled Crab, and a Pamama Au Lait. "No way I can lose", I thought to myself.

Here's the thing. Thunderspark will slow you down. A lot. At maxed summoning skill, Carby doesn't do nearly enough damage to Ramuh to rely on him meleeing and finishing it off. If I had taken THREE Hi-Potions and THREE Ethers instead of the two, I would've beat him senseless x_x

In conclusion, you may want to mention that for the Ramuh battle, go overprepared. Very overprepared. Bring three or four of items if you need to.

I seriously would've had him, too :/

Edit: I just reread the guide and realized it said "Bring 4..." Uh, pay serious attention to that part of the guide ^^

I thought I would write down the step by step results of my Winning fight angainst Ramuh in hopes that it may help you.

Note:
These are just the "Main" things that happened in the order in which they happened. I left out everything elese such as melee dmg from Carby or Damage numbers that he and I took.

-Casted Carbuncle.
-Ramuh Starts to come for us.
-Ramuh Casts Thunderspark.
-Carbuncle and I are paralyzed.
-Cast Paralyna on myself.
-Run to the Crystal and wait.
-Carbuncle was defeated by Ramuh.
-Use Yagudo Drink
-Casted Carbuncle.
-Ran up to Ramuh.
-Astral Flow
-Searling Light #1
-Ran to Nest.
-Carbuncle was defeated by Ramuh.
-Casted Carbuncle.
-Used an Ether.
-Ran up to Ramuh
-Searing Light #2
-Ran to Crystal.
-Carbuncle was defeated by Ramuh.
-Casted Carbuncle.
-Used a Hi Potion.
-Used an Ether.
-Ramuh casts Shockstrike.
-I am Stunned.
-Thiefcat is no longer Stunned.
-Searing Light #3
-Ramuh was Defeated by Carbuncle.

Thats it. As you can see I only used 1 Hi-Potion and 2 Ethers. This was by far my cheapest fight yet. I fought Ramuh on Lightsday (Carby's strong day) and had Protect II and Shell II. I also got Barthunder but am not sure when it wore off. I also used a boiled Crayfish for the Def boost.

I truely believe Ramuh can be beat if you follow my instruction and know what to expect. This should help you guys out I hope. =)

Is this insider information you've gotten from SE regarding how fame works, or is it your own assumptions that you're passing off as fact?

I've got a lot of experience with fame, having over time worked my way high enough for the drain and aspir quests, the warp quests, teleport quests, avatars and finally hero status. And frankly, despite all that experience I wouldn't feel comfortable saying I know for a fact exactly how fame works. But perhaps you've got an inside line that I don't.

Maybe you have to say more than "No way I can lose" to yourself^^. I say to my self before fighting ramuh "Come on old man, be my slave!" thought to myself lol, and i won the fight^^

hehe its just a joke about saying that you could win the battle. Just refer to thiefcat guide to win over ramuh, I accidentally found out the same way on battling ramuh as thiefcat did.

Instead paralyzing carbuncle, he paralyzing me. So my carbuncle still can fight ramuh.
Wish you luck on your next battle with ramuh.

Well I am an honest person and will tell you this is my opinion only. But I too have done Fame for quests.

The fact still remains...

I currently only hold lvl 2 fame in both bastok and sandoria and have aquired the Avatar battles. One other thing to mention is this. I have only handed in 8 treant bulbs in Bastok which gave me Fame 2. I have only done 9 Flint Stone quests in SanDoria.

Now since you have done so many fame based quests, you should know, (if there was a level to each fame), that would put me at the lowest end of the Fame 2 scale. Meaning according to the theory that there is different levels of fame for each fame rank I am even farther away from Fame 3 then if there was only one step to each fame.

I stress this point so much cause I want new Summoners to know they don't need to go crazy spending money or time getting fame just to quest for avatars.

He's right, actually.

Your attitude has a lot to do with it. With the Ramuh battle, I was so nervous, I forgot to use my Pear au Lait. With the Shiva battle, I used Astral Flow and my Yagudo Drink way too early. Carby and I had to melee Shiva into oblivion.

Both times, I went into those fights with sweaty palms, as nervous as humanly possible. It was ridiculous. Here I was... pining after the SMN job for over a year, and I was facing the chance to prove myself to myself.

And then I went up against Titan.

Granted, every single guide says that Titan was a cakewalk, but my battle was picture perfect. I used everything in the right order, I positioned myself perfectly, and did everything I was supposed to. Not one of the Searing Lights was resisted. Titan's two-hour never hit me. I never had to use a Hi-Potion. (My bank book is very happy about that little detail.) I ended the battle 15 HP short of max, and feeling great. Next stop is Ifrit.

So remember that these battles may be difficult, but you have the advantage of research and community. If you do what these guides tell you, you will do well. Say it with me: you will do well.

And if you do lose a couple, so what? An hour of farming down the drain? Come back with a vengeance. Show that avatar who's boss.

Sorry I just get sick of people coming to these boards and passing off assumptions or misinformation as fact (and usually getting rated up for it).

Fame is a mysterious thing, and it's always one person's word against the other's. There used to be tons of debates like the one in this thread back before the level 20 quests were added. I've heard people swear they couldn't get the leviathan fork (the normal one, not the mini) until the price of rice balls in Jeuno went down to 155. I've heard others say they got it at 157 and still others say it took them till 153. Some people swear you need level 7 fame to get the forks. Others swear with equal vehemence that they got them at level 6.

On a tangent, does anyone really know how fame is calculated? Exactly how many turn-ins it takes to get a level of fame? Is each turn-in weighted the same, or do some quests advance you more than others? Maybe the number of turn-ins needed varies from person to person. Can we be certain that getting fame isn't like getting summoning skill-ups, with each turn-in not necessarily resulting in a "point" of fame but merely giving you a random chance of getting a "point"?

Keep one thing in mind as you insist that there is no "in-between" fame: To gain a new level of fame, you need a certain amount of quest turn-ins. Clearly, the game must be keeping track or count of these turn-ins, assigning them some sort of point value. (Why should we assume this? Because each quest turn-in does not equal one level of fame, correct?) And clearly there must be some formula for determing how many turn-in "points" it takes to get a new level of fame. Therefore, there must be SOME sort of in-between. Now does the game recognize the in-betweens as triggers to open certain quests? I can't say for sure one way or another. I'm not sure I know anyone who is qualified to say they know FOR CERTAIN that the avatar quests aren't triggered by an in-between number.

You also need to question the validity of the accepted fame ranking system. I personally have never seen any official word from SE on the matter, have you? My personal opinion is that the fame "levels" we always refer to are merely numbers that, over time, players have assigned to the different fame messages in order to talk about and make some sort of sense of the fame system. As far as I've been able to tell, the fame messages are more of vague guidelines to show your progress, rather than a concrete number such as "You have reached level 27 summoning skill." Through people's experiences they've vaugly assigned a fame level to certain quests, but really it's more of an anecdotal window: "I was not able to get this quest before, but at some point after I achieved X fame message I was able to get it." Is it possible the quest could have been opened sooner? Of course, but this is the trigger most people have been able to agree on.

Unless you check both your fame message and the avatar NPC after EVERY SINGLE quest turn-in, I think it's pretty presumptious to say you know exactly where the trigger is.

Until someone does this, and it's verified that this works for everyone, the method for obtaining avatar forks will continue to be overshooting until you're reasonably certain you've got the level of fame required before running around to all the NPCs.

Great Post Daione.

Well I know what your saying about Fame. Its like most things in the game for us to figure out I guess.

As for the numbering system, yes there may not be something that states, Fame Level 2 aquired. But those saying I posted are the standard sayings for their respective cities. So numbering them is fine, since you will never recieve any variation on those sayings.

I remember trying to get the next Fame listing in Windy once so that I could keep doing the harder quests there, and I would check my fame after every quest I did, cause I just knew it should go up soon. And the saying never changed from the current one I had until I reached the next Fame level.

There have been a few things posted on the Number of quests required to increase your fame for each level. I have no idea if they are right or not, but I will try to find them and post them here.

Took the words right out of my mouth Daione, having moved them about and made them a bit more eloquent first ^^

There is, and may never be, a way of finding out about the invisible counter that is racking up your fame in between levels. And as you said, without careful and extremely long-winded experimentation, there is no way of knowing whether this affects the quests.

I'm glad that the point I made was valid, and all I hope people to have gained from this is perhaps a readjusted attitude when it comes to the necessary fame levels for quests in future - not "You ONLY need level 2 fame for this quest", but rather "It is possible under the right circumstances to do this quest with level 2 fame".

Now that's cleared up, I have to earn some money for the other half of my avatar fights ^^;
