I posted this on a whole new thread before I realized it'd be better to post it here. Can you guys help me out?
I'm 1/1 on Shiva, 1/1 on Titan, but 0/2 on Ifrit. The first time I fought him, he pulled off a Fire II on Carby at the most inopportune moment. By the time I resummoned him and readied Searing Light, my Astral Flow wore off right before Carby casted it. The second time I fought him, I again got two Searing Lights, but as I was about to cast the third his Inferno killed us both in one shot.
So I'm trying to figure out what I'm doing wrong, and only two things come to mind.
1. I haven't been using any Boiled crab or Boiled Crayfish. I know that boosts my defense, but does it also boost Carby's defense? That leads me to my second problem...
2. It always seems like the Avatar is right on my butt the whole fight. I cast Searing Light, begin running away to the other side, and Carby is practically dead or is dead before I'm just half way there. I barely have enough time to recast him and then use an ether. But when I watch the videos, it seems like other people manage to not only make it completely on the other side, but they stand there for a good 5-10 seconds as Carby beats up the avatar. How do they do that? Am I just unlucky, or does the Boiled Crab/Crayfish make the difference? Shiva and the first fight against Ifrit were the only times I fought the avatars on their weak day, but it didn't seem any different than the other times when I fought Titan and Ifrit for the second time.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

First you should definatly use Boiled Crab or at least the Crayfish. There is very little difference between them from what I've seen so far. Used the Crab for Shiva and Crayfish for Ifrit and after both fights I've still had a HI-Potion left after the battle.
Second I've also had this problem with the avatar's killing Carby just before I reach halfway and when I reach the bottom or top and summo Carby again they're already about to hit me again. I never took much damage from them though since I've been buffed with protect and shell 4 before each battle (Thanks to Cylus) and have evasion gear on. Also I have very bad luck of the avatar using their 2hour right on carby at the begining of the fight so that even I take about 100ish dmg and carby's at about 1/6th life left. So I run about halfway and carby is dead so I resummon asap so he'll get the agro back.
So far the Searing Light plan has worked for me the best and I'm 1/1 on Ifrit and Shiva...Hope this helps a bit.

People often forget these fights are VERY much luck-based. There are a number of things to slowly tweak your luck towards your favor; but a Fire II or Inferno at the wrong moment will make things difficult for you.
As far as the avatar coming at you when you're halfway down, get a Hermit's Wand; it'll help you summon when the avatar is beating on you, which chances are will happen in that situation.

Very nice guide!
I watched some video's of the fights on to give me a good image of the battles. Search for 'avatar battle (name avatar)'. Be sure to watch the level 20 capped fights.
I noticed that the avatars could also lose aggro. This happened to me a couple of times with Ramuh and Titan. I think it was because of that I ran past the crystal. The avatar would just go back to its spawning point while it healed on the way back. Not good...

I would just like to add my 2gil on the 20 cap fights.

I am going to try to be as thurough as I can so please bear with me. (And pardon any spelling or grammar errors.^^ It is about 2 in the morning here.)
First off, Equipment:
(NOTE: I am only going to list stats for equipment that is relative to the 20 Capped fights.)
Hermits Wand: INT+2 MND+2 Spell Interruption Rate Down 25%
Erudite's Headband: DEF:4 INT+1 Evasion+3
Black Silk Neckercheif: DEF:2 INT+1
(2x)Silver Earring +1: Evasion+2
Priest's Robe: DEF:14 MND+1
Carbuncle Mitts: DEF:5 MP+14 (Hidden Effect: Carbuncle Perpetuation Cost Down)
(NOTE: You may not be able to get the Carbuncle Mitts. This is understandable! If you cannot get them then use Scentless Armlets. I belive they are Eva+5 and may give you DEF:1 or 2. Also, during my fight using Carbuncle Mitts it only cost 1mp/tick to keep Carbuncle out. When using a Yagudo Drink I would gain 2mp/tick. This helps keep your mp up.)
(2x)Reflex Ring +1: DEF:1 AGI+1 vs.Wind+5 (This is actually only useful in the Garuda fight but I chose it for the DEF and AGI boost.)
Talisman Cape: DEF:2 Enchantment: MP+12 Enmity-2
(NOTE: I want to say something about the Talisman Cape real quick. This has been probably the one thing that has made the most difference in my fights. The Enmity-2 is just enough to help Carby get the hate back just a little bit faster every time you resummon him. It may save you those extra couple of hits that killed you or give you that extra second or two to get farther away from the avatar before it defeats Carbuncle. I have noticed my fights are very smooth because of this. I would rather have the extra MP and Enminty- than a MND+ in this senario.)

Mage's Slacks: DEF:11 INT+1

Now, I am NOT going to tell you how to do the actuall fights. What I AM going to do is tell you that I read this guide, I made some of my own personal tweaking to the Equipment they suggested (as well as my items I bring) And I have been 1/1 on every fight since. (YES! EVEN RAMUH!)
ANOTHER thing I am going to do is try to reinforce a couple of key points that I think can never be said too many times.
#1: DON'T PANIC!!!!! This is the most COMMON cause of death!
#2: BRING 5 YAGUDO DRINKS! I ALWAYS let Carby have fun with the avatar until my third Yag Drink has worn off. (For those of you who can't count that is >9< Minutes into the fight. Remember you have 15 minutes to defeat the avatar. USE THEM.) Because I let Carby wear down the Avatar through 3 Yagudo Drinks, Carby will ALWAYS kill the avatar after 2 Searing Lights. Even on the fight where BOTH of my Searing Lights were resisted the second one was still enough to finish him.
#3: Follow the guide! The guide is VERY well written in explaining each step of the fight. With my setup there are only a few small modifiacations:
First, make sure you activate your Talisman Cape before casting Aquaveil. You should also use your Pamama au Lait or Persikos au Lait at that time as well.
#4 DON'T PANIC!!!!! I say this again because people don't get how the priority system works for this fight. Here is how you should prioritize what you do:
ONE>>> SUMMON CARBUNCLE! If carbuncle is not out you should be summoning him. If you are not, smack yourself and then proceed to do so. THE ONLY EXCEPTION, is if the VERY NEXT hit will kill you. In that case pop a potion and start summoning Carby again.
TWO>>> RUN AWAY! As soon as Carby has gotten two good hits on the avatar you should be running the opposite direction! Now I know sometimes carby just is stupid and doesnt keep the hate...in this case STOP! Let the avatar hit you...big deal. You need Carby to get a hold of the hate. As soon as he picks it back up keep running.
THREE>>> Use items ONLY if you are preparing to 2HR, OR if Carby is doing good hp-wise and you are as far away as you can be while still being able to see Carbuncle's HP-bar. (Obviously if you are getting ready to die, you should use a Hi-Potion^^)
My fights averaged between 11 Minutes and 13 Minutes. This may not be a record, but I would rather take my time, stay calm, and win every fight.
I hope this helps you on your next 20 cap. If I have made some GRAVE error or you find something that might work better PLEASE post it! This is my little insight to the world of the ppl who have a hard time doing a triple SL in 5 minutes. It's okay though...I will take my extra 7 minutes and guarentee my win.^^

I'm 1/1 on every Avatars fight except Shiva! I want to get her so bad! I'm already 0/5 and I have read every guide and watch every video. I don't know what to do anymore. I have wasted over 50K on her that it's so pathetic. I see people win her easily and watch video how they kill her off easily. With Shiva it's a little different, she 2 Hours Diamond Dust me at a very unappropriated time! Before I could even activate my 3rd Searing Light! If I take my time fight her, using Hi - Potion, re-summon Carbuncle my 2 hours just worn off, then she laugh her ass off like she know I will loose, then she Diamond Dust me to death and walk away >.<
1st Fight
Didn't know what I was doing, didn't read any Guide. Just go in there and kill her with Carbuncle. I beat the record for the fastest death.
2nd Fight
Read some guide and watch fews video, still death. Notice my death due to running away too quickly when Carbuncle go for Searing Light. Carbuncle readies Searing Light. Shiva Prime is too far away. :O
3rd Fight
3rd Searing Light would not activate. Look at my log and I see "An error occur...Death after that. Shouldn't have Searing Light macro as Searing Light <bt>
4th Fight
3rd Searing Light didn't go off again, this time it wasn't because of the Macro but I notice my 2 hours has worn off.
5th Fight
This one is a major pain in the ass because I thought I win for sure. I have about 104 HP left, 3rd Searing Light was ready and I thought 104HP is not a big deal, don't want to waste any time so the 2 hours wouldn't wear off again. I go for the 3rd Searing Light for the instant kill. Carbuncle Readies Searing Light. Shiva Prime readies Diamond Dust. BAM! I eat dirt! I look at my log and I see Diamond Dust hit me for 104 Damage. The exact HP I have! I got so mad! I swear Shiva hate me!

I use the 2 Searing Light method, luckily I bring barely enough Ether and Hi-Potion to finish her off. Clear time of 11 minutes. Not going for Record anyway. If you have problem with the fight, try the 2 Searing Method where you get the prime HP down to 70% and finish it off with 2 Searing Light.

Hey guys im having some problems ><.
Ive been trying to beat the avatars for a whole week and my score is 0/6 Shiva, 0/5 Garuda, and 0/4 Titan. Pretty pathetic, i kno. But my problem is whenever carby is about to do his 3rd SL he always stops in the middle and never does the move. I always stay in place when hes charging and im facing the avatar so i have NO IDEA whats wrong!!
Does anyone else have this problem or am i doing something wrong?
Any help would be appreciated :)

2hour timer ran out, use it quicker. Beyond that I cant help, I wiped on titan 2x, but i also had no buffs and never read a guide on how to fight him. After that I decided to just do primes and keep the mini's open incase i do fights as smn for people.. quick tele.

Thanks for the tip but i have always had my 2-hour ability on when ive used it. Sometimes carby stopped doing SL on the first try.
Can the avatar interrupt carby with a normal attack or by switching aggro?

1. Carby was paralyzed. Shiva's Ice Spikes and Ramuh's Thunderspark can cause this.
2. You had too little mana. I don't remember the formula anymore, but there is a minimum amount of MP you have to have to use an Astral Flow BP. I think its something along the lines of 1/10th your total MP. If you are below this, the avatar will "warm up" his BP, but then it won't go off.

To use an astral flow BP u just need to have your lvl x 2 mp.
So, @ lvl 20 u need 40 mp.

I just finished my round of fights. I got Shiva, Titan, and Leviathan on my first try each with the method in this guide. After that I was 0/5 on Garuda, 0/1 on Ramuh, and 0/2 on Ifrit before I changed up my strategy.
Well, I stuck with the same strategy on Garuda, but waited for Carby to take out her shadows before using 2HR. I managed to kill her just as I died (don't know how that worked, but I can summon her, so yay), just by keeping Carby out, meleeing, and using Hi-Potions and Hi-Ethers.
On Ramuh, I brought a few extra Hi-Potions, but it was the end of my timeploaying for a couple of days, and I couldn't wait for the right day, so I ened up fighting him on Windsday. Not only were my Searing Lights just as powerful, but I didn't even run after the second, and just pounded on him with Carby until I could do my third. Didn't even use all my potions.
On Ifrit, I found it to be Lightsday, almost out of time, and I didn't want to face him on Darksday. I also could find NO ethers or Hi-ethers at any AH. So, I just grabbed a few extra Hi-Potions and figured I'd give it a shot. I didn't even bother trying to run away, I just basically tanked with my tiny taru body so Carby could do more damage. Only had to resummon Carby once, got all three searing lights off, and only used 5 Hi-Potions, which cost me less than all the Hi-Ethers I wasted fighting these guys the "safe" way. Much to my surprise, I even set the record for my server on Ifrit :).
I know people are interested in getting all the avatars unlocked as quickly as possible, so a "safe" strategy is good, and like I said, it worked very smoothly for my first three avatars. But it was never fun, until I started changing things up. It was... exciting, but annoying, because it seemed to require a fair amount of luck to get all three searing lights off without something going wrong.
I have no doubt I had some luck on my side in this last battle, but even with a small HP pool, it's tough to die if you never get below 150HP by using hi-Potions. To me, it made sense to switch tatctics when I realized that these battles are not meant to be fought in any way like we work normally in groups in the game. I think they were meant to be fought fighting alongside Carby, rather than letting Carby die while you run away and play it safe. Well, it was fun for me, anyway.

I was trying to get the prime fights so that I would have the Avatars. I'm not sure wtf was going on but I couldn't get Ramuh or the one from Tavnazia with lvl 9 Fame in Windurst. My LS leader and I keep arguing over it "being a fame thing". When I hit lvl 15 SMN this morning I thought I'd try again and was able to get the mini fork >_<
I'm a little pissed at having to wait until I'm 20 to do this fight, which was half the reason I wanted to do the Prime fights, and can't understand why I'm not able to get the Prime fork or whatever.
Anyone have any ideas? Cause I'm totally confused. Hopefully either today or later tonight I'll hit 20 and try Ramuh.

Your ls leader is probably right. The 'Tavnazia avatar', I'm assuming you meant 'Norg' as there is no avatar for Tavnazia, Which would be Leviathan, DOES have a higher fame requirement and its not based on Windy fame (although the quest is done in windy) Its actually Norg fame.
The last I remember most prime avatar fame requirements were around fame 6-7, while Leviathan required fame 8 if memory serves me. Its been a good while though. My suggestion is just max out your fame so this is never an issue again.

The wierd thing is that i just couldnt beat shiva! 0/4 but when i missed fires day and came at the beginning of earths day she was so easy i couldnt belive it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i also beat titan on off day!

Just my two cents but when i fought Levi i got resisted 1/3 times every single time.... 5 times in row.... and then procded to pwn me... the way i ended up winning was to melee him with craby out after 3'ed SL with him @ about 2% hp.... right before i died i got dia off... died... sat there, few sec later dia killed levi and i got the win :) So if the avatar dies u win... regardless if your dead or not lol. dia in last resort if low hp% might just win it fo ru
This is a great guide, and it sure helped me get my avatars, which was the most fun I have ever had in this game to date. I also like how you aknowledge the npcs by name. Most guides say "Its a taru standing next to a(n) <insert bigger race here>
I dont know if anyone has brought this up yet, but in the fights near the cities... like Shiva from San'Doria or Titan near Bastok, you can get refresh and regen from the field manuals right outside the city. This removes the need for Yagudo drinks, PLUS you dont have to worry about it expiring in the middle of the battle... I lost my first Garuda fight cause my Yag drink ran out and i only had 2 mp.. couldn't use an ether and resummon Carby in time before she got the last hit on me...
I'd suggest this tactic, if you guys dont use it already. It's free, best of all. And the support lasts longer than drinks.
