Thinking this may be a better place to ask that the last I tried.

Thinking of taking up FFXIV some time, back when it came out I only had a dinky laptop that never would have been able to play it but later on I upgraded to a PC. Only problem is I never planned it as a gaming system and I really know next to nothing about hardware to figure how it stands up. I could wait for the game to come out on PS3 whenever but I figure the better experience may be playing it on PC so I'm curious.

I used a site that scans your PC against system requirements and it brought up red flags for my processor and video card. It lists the recommended processor as an Intel Core i7 (2.66 GHz) or faster while I have an Intel Core i3 CPU 550 @ 3.20GHz and the recommended video card is a NVIDIA GeForce GTX 460 with 768 MB VRAM or equivalent while I have a GeForce GT 430 with 3.7 GB.

Could anyone give me an idea of how well my system would play the game? Would playing at/under the recommended requirements or however I stack up be worse off than playing on a ps3?

FFXIV does make use of processor cores, the more it can get the happier. Your i3 processor is going to be a little lacking in that department, but you shouldn't notice it unless you are going to be doing alot of higher end raiding in large groups later in game.

Your video card is a bit on the anemic side, but it will play the game. You are probably looking at mid to low video settings, You can pick up a geforce 560 GTX TI for under $200 at the moment, so that might be a good way to go.

The video card in your PS3 is actually going to be an older nvidia 7800 GTX derived custom card that Sony and Nvidia put together when the PS3 launched. The FFXIV for PS3 is basically an entirely different graphics engine and behaves differently than the PC equivelent. I personally feel the PC is a far superior platform in terms of video quality, but the PS3 is likely to maintain 100% stability in all raid situations with the hardware it presently has in it. Your video card by the way is probably a 1024MB or lower card in terms of video memory. They didn't make a 3.7GB video ram 430 GT. About the closest you will find is the $550ish Geforce 590 GTX 3GB or the 680GTX equivelent. If you want to know exactly what you have in terms of video hardware, download the free GPU-z program from http://www.techpowerup.com/gpuz/ and run it. I'm guessing that 3.7GB number is the amount of motherboard ram your system has. Ram is dirt cheap these days, assuming you are running 64 bit windows 7, at a minimum double that. If you aren't running 64 bit windows 7, go to 64 bit windows 7 first, then add more ram, then consider FFXIV. Windows XP is fine for gaming, but windows xp 64bit sucks and games these days like lots of system ram to go with their cores. Especially FFXIV.

If you are considering upgrading, a video card upgrade to at least a 560 GTX would be the easiest upgrade to implement, ram is probably the cheapest. A processor upgrade is going to be tricky if you haven't built or upgraded your own system before. you may want to get assistance with that.
