Hey Kao, can my title be changed to "Catwho Destroyer of Keyboards?" Smiley: lol

I've hammered to death two keyboards in the last week. I've got a replacement in the mail, but I have a feeling it won't go beyond the 6-8 months that these two keyboards each lasted. (I broke the little lifter thing off the second keyboard, so it's currently being propped up with a small bottle of sunscreen that was a nice wedge shape.)

So I'm looking for something a bit more durable. I've heard good things about mechanical keyboards, but I really don't know anything about them.

I type fast 60-80 WPM with higher spikes if I'm in "the zone" and I hammer the keys really hard because I learned to type on an ancient IBM keyboard. I don't need an ergo keyboard (although I have been very fond of the Microsoft Curve 2000s, which I am unfortunately in the habit of breaking) but I do need a standard layout with function keys, a number pad, and a minimal amount of extra keys along the sides and edges because I am a true touch typist and that really screws me up.

Suggestions?

Steelseries 7g
Has
Standard layout
Function keys
Number Pad
No extra keys
and the real reason I would recommend it to you
Guaranteed keyboard lifecycle of 50 million keystrokes

It does come with a hefty price tag though.

The steelseries keboard is a good option, as would be a Das Keyboard model. Both come with a price tag. If you want an inexpensive, indestructable keyboard, you want to look at the ones Dell makes for their buisiness class workstations. They have very few frills, are kind of goofy looking, but are completely indestructible. We've literally been trying to kill one to see how much it can take. so far, no luck.

There are several variants that will work. The dell SK-8115 is probably the more common.

The best of the lot though is one that Dell released fairly recently, but for a very short period of time. I "Think" the model is Dell T347F (http://www.ebay.com/itm/Dell-Black-Slim-USB-Keyboard-SK-8175-L30U-M372H-T347F-/200619463769?pt=PCA_Mice_Trackballs&hash=item2eb5da1459) but i'll have to check for sure. Basically what they are is if you took the guts of an old style IBM clicky keyboard, then shrunk it down so its basically just the keys and aa 1/4" border all around the keyboard, but made of really solid plastic, thats the keyboard you would have. We ended up with about a hundred of them at other work, and they are very popular with people who have until then refused to give up their old style keybboards.

Logitech has some decent ones too.

I'm allergic to Dells, and I was willing to shell out some big bucks for a keyboard, so the price tags aren't scaring me too much. I'll seriously look into that 7G.

Kao, if you want to mail me that Dell keyboard you're trying to break, I promise I will have destroyed it within a month. Smiley: nod
