Computer freezing (FFXI)Follow

Hey guys, I've been starting to have some issues with my PC freezing while playing FFXI. It has always done it now and then in the past, but lately it has gotten pretty bad. I generally run 2 instances of FFXI at once, but it happens even if only running 1(rarely). Though I guess it should also be noted that I run the 2nd character at a different resolution (if that could affect anything at all).

In any case, it's generally always similar things that cause the crash. Job abilities (pretty much all of them, though meditate is a repeat offender), and the CS when you enter a maw (when screen goes fuzzy and makes that "whoosh" sound before you turn into light and fly into it) are what makes it happen the most. It has never done it while just standing around in town or any other zone really and is always while I'm doing something.

I recently updated to the newest ATI drivers, though that's causing another whole set of problems that I won't list here for now since I haven't had time to really test it.

I know people often say to make sure there's no dust on the video card and to make sure it isn't too hot, but just hot hot is "too hot"? Mine generally sits right around 120-125 F (48-50 C). Is this good/bad?

Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
AMD Phenom II X4 925
8.0GB Dual-Channel DDR3
ATI Radeon HD 5670

Thats a decent video card temperature actually. Have you already updated your video drivers?

If so, and you are still crashing, can you check event log for any error messges that correspond with the crash times?

I'm using the new drivers now, but the crashing was so sporadic it may take some time to know if the new ones will solve it yet. I was a bit reluctant to try new drivers because of issues I posted in this thread. You can see pics near the bottom of some of the issues the new drivers are causing.

As for checking event logs, I know how to get there but what specifically would I be looking for?

Edit: Using the newest ATI drivers, just crashed again. Once again, it was during the meditate animation. File check shows nothing is wrong, so I don't think it's some funky broken .dat issue (not that I've even touched that one).

Edit 2: here's a SS of the log from the exact moment my PC froze

700 watts. Too much, not enough?

I wish I knew more of what I should look for in the logs. There's quite a lot of them Smiley: eek 40 errors in the last 24hrs, 123 in the last 7 days. 7 critical but they all say the same thing, that the system wasn't shut down properly.

Edit: Just happened again, with the same errors as before. This time seigan was the culprit. I'm really baffled as to why job abilities would cause my entire PC to crash rather than just kill POL.

Also, noticed some warnings that have very similar times to the crashes (and as such, there are 2 of them):

The only thing I can think of that the vast majority of crashes have in common is that I'm always 2boxing and in abyssea, but how that could cause problems like this I have no idea Smiley: frown

700 should be fine if the PSU isn't failing or a crap brand underwatted one. What prompted that was the the kernel power and the hard drive volume manager event right at the same time. Usually, but not always that means the hard drive took a power hit and the operating system detected a power issue of some sort.

Lets try and rule out the hard drive first. Download and run Speedfan http://www.almico.com/sfdownload.php and then find the hard drive tab and run the SMART error report for your main hard drive. If the two green lines at the bottom of that indicate at or close to 100% you are good there. If either of those bars are low, you may have a problem there.

If that checks out, i'd try downloading chipset, sound, mass storage, and video card driver updates and see if that resolves anything.

If that doesn't fix anything, you are probably looking at a minimum of trying an operating system reload, but it may be the motherboard voltage regulator or the power supply at that point. Possibly the ram, but you would be seeing the error more frequintly in that case. Its only crashing under gaming load though, and you indicate it isn't overheating so maybe PSU, but they usually fail all the way or not at all. I've seen the PSU itself lose a fan and start to overheat before, and with no temperature sensors in it, that could be a possibility. Maybe open the case up, blow any dust out, ensure all your fans are operational, etc.

I downloaded Speedfan, everything seems to be fine with the hard drive according to it. I'll try looking for new drivers for other things but it may take some time to know if they work since it can sometimes go weeks without crashing.

One thing I haven't tried yet (which I only learned of last night) is that FFXI absolutely hates multiple cores, so I'm going to try setting the affinity for each instance to its own and see if that helps with anything.

Thanks a ton for all the help and suggestions btw. Hopefully I can get this all cleared up soon and get the game working properly. Just sucks that FFXI is the only game that has any of these problems Smiley: mad (or, maybe that's a good thing...)
