Hi,

Since about patch 4.0 I've been experiencing serious problems playing WoW when I want to play.

It is currently 7:15pm and I'm running on just under 1,000ms ping. I just finished Deepholm and it was nearly 2k in some fights. This makes combat a lot of guesswork and some quests completely impossible.

The Seahorse mount quest in Vash'Ji for instance. I just didn't see the directions in time to press the right key.

The thing is I got up early the next day and did that quest with no trouble at all at about 100ms ping. Even in the peak hours when WoW is off the scale and unplayable I can log onto CoD and play with 60ms.

The same effect happens on the computer next to me. I think that means I can eliminate PC config. The ADSL router has the port settings recommended by the WoW site.

In case it matters the PC is running W7 Pro with 4Gb RAM. It has bags of power. Rebooting doesn't seem to help much.

I have wondered if my ISP can differentially handle contention. I also wonder about WoW server capacity. Thing is I swapped from a server marked "Medium" to one marked "Full" and the ping got a little bit better (1800 >>1300!).

I could change ISP but if the problem is contention at the exchange then that might not make any difference.

1. Does anyone else get this problem?
2. Does anyone have any suggestions for a solution?

I have some info on this finally.

It appears that WoW traffic is being treated by my ISP (Virgin) and some others as "peer-to-peer" and de-prioritised by their traffic-shaping software.

This is partly because Blizzard changed their communication methods and partly because Virgin are w*nk*rs.
