Can't get past loading screenFollow

After the character selection, I just get stuck on the "Now Loading..." screen, i've never logged into the game before(first time user)

My firewalls are off, antivirus off, ports are forwarded, Drivers are up to date.

System specs:
Laptop Model: Asus G73JH
Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
Intel i7 Q720 @ 1.6ghz (8 cores total)
6gb RAM
ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5870
Internet(Broadband): 375 kbps download rate, 125 kbps upload rate (in case it isn't good enough)

Ran FFXIV benchmark at about 3500
I've reinstalled the game numerous times
All other games on my computer work perfectly fine.

All help is appreciated

There seem to be a large number of people experiancing issues with that particular mobile card and FFXIV. There is a workaround shown in this thread here:

Might be worth attempting?
