Ive done a lot of research for the right video card and right price for this game. I bought a Evga 460 768mb. I can run it pretty well on med-high settings. If I could go back I would get a 1gb version instead of a 768mb though. Do not get a 9800 gtx for this game. It will barely run it. I know a couple of people that play on a 9800 and it lags like crazy for them. You might want to look into buying a new PC also. You processor is very weak. So just about any video card you can buy that will play FFXIV well, will be bottlenecked by your CPU. So if you are going to want to play this well you'll need to get a 3-6 core CPU with a $200+ video card. the New ATI 6850 or Nvidia 460 will run FFXIV with good FPS. but if you arent going to get a new CPU you should stick with lower end video cards. Such as the ATI 5770 or Nvidia 250. Both will run it on low setting and wont be bottlenecked too much my your CPU.

Doh. Above you say it will be bottlenecked by my cpu. I know that means it will limit how good the card is because it is a ****** processor, but I dont necessarily need the best gameplay. I am just curious if I can get by with decent play/not too ****** of graphics without renewing anything except my grpahics card, because I only have money for 1 for the time being, and am going crazy not being able to play this game that has been sitting on my desk for 3 months! lol

meh...just shoot for a deal on an ATI 4870 (better memory than the 4850, but that works too if budget is more important) or nvidia 260 to 285 card. If your BIOS has the options, look into overclocking your CPU and/or RAM just a hair. That E7300 should be able to get up to 3 GHz (300 FSB x 10) if you have decent airflow, or at least a bump up to 2.75/2.83 GHz depending on your options in the BIOS--som have even gotten them t 3.33GHz or higher with advanced cooling setups. I used a 4850 with an E8400 CPU in the beta, and it did fine at both the stock 3 GHz and 4GHz at the 720p resolution--obviously, I went with the 4GHz speed, those 4800's really scale well with the CPU.

Okay I was finally able to upgrade my GPU, thank you all. I went with a geforce gtx 460 nvidia card. I know my cpu bottlnecks it, but i plan on upgrading other parts soon enough. I ran the benchmark for ffxiv and got ~3000 on low and a bit over 2000 on high.

I have posted in other forums, but these ones seem to give me the most help in responses so I'll repost here.

When i open up ffxiv, the update browser does not load anything. I have read that many people had similar problems, but could not figure out how to fix it. It stays at 0% (even after 5 hours) and the update screen is red(I think it should be blue). It shows that there is only about 1 or 0 local connections, while everything else(upload speed, download speed, remote connections remains at 0). I read somewhere some people saying to do something related to port forwarding, however, not only am I not sure exactly how to do that, but I am at UCSB where I am not the one with access to the router, and all students are under the same internet.

If anyone has any idea it would be greatly appreciated

I think red is the boot loader and blue is the actual game. Since you are at a university they may be blocking torrent traffic. Do you know if bit torrent is blocked at you campus?

wow how odd. So ya icouldnt torrent, have been trying for 2 days even overnight, but it slowly starte torrenting one of the files that was sitting on the download @0% for 2 days. its 60% done, and i decided to try lauching the ffxi booter for the 100th time and it actually completed it and now opened the blue screen. It stayed at 0% on this new screen though. 20 minutes later I closed and retryed and now its downloading at like 1mb/sec which i think is pretty fast. Im curious if it was a coincidense that the torrent and the uploader started to work at the same time. My guess is that the school was blocking it somehow, and now its not? Idk

Thanks for the help though, I'll keep this updated if more errors pursue. been 6 minutes and its 40% done :b

Ugh I jynxed it 30 seconds after it started fluctating crazily and went from 1mb/s down to almost 1kb/s.... then up a bit but then back to 0..... IDK wtf im doing wrong or whats up with this. Does it save the files i already downloaded if i reboot it? cuz if so, maybe I can just keep doing what I was. I found it wierd too. Was sitting at ~40 local connections and 7 remote, then it dropped to 0 remots and like 5 local and 0% download.... fml

It is a torrent so you have the finished pieces saved on your hard drive all ready. It maybe that your university allows torrents at certain time or had to restart something which is why it worked for awhile.

There are ways to get around your ISP blocking torrents, but I am not the best person to ask

Ya thats what i figured. It was really odd. I just kept resetting the download (Luckily for me, it remembers what you already downloaded and doesnt have to restart) until it eventually would start building up local connections, then download at a slow pace. 9/10 times, it would have 0 everything, so i would just keep restarting it, a little would download, then it would go to 0 again and stay there. I finally got it finished though and already am a lvl 12 Marauder :D Thanks for all the help though guys i really appreciate it.
