Building new rig for FFXIV - help appreciated!Follow

#1 Sep 24 2010 at 2:42 PM Rating: Decent
I'm trying to put together a new gaming rig that will better support my (potentially obsessive) FFXIV playing. My current PC does *run* it, but barely. Guess I'm just looking for an excuse to upgrade :)I think I have a good grasp on components, but want to make sure I am not missing anything and that they're all compatible. If you can offer any advice on components of better value (more bang-for-your-buck) or whatnot, please do!

Here is what I am looking at so far:

MOBO ($200): http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131665
CPU ($300): http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115211
CPU Cooler ($30): http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835103065
GPU ($0, already have): http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814162052&cm_re=galaxy_465-_-14-162-052-_-Product
PSU ($160): http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817121068
RAM ($140): http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820145220
Optical: ($20): http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827135204
Case: ($90): http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811133074
Keeping my old HDD, Monitor, etc.and already have Win7 64-bit

As mentioned, I already have the graphics card, so that part is non-negotiable (link included for compatibility purposes). I am trying to keep the cost at around $1000 AFTER tax and shipping. I will be using billmelater.com, so all parts must come from NewEgg (or another site that carries all components needed, and accepts billmelater). Also, I am trying to have this rig ready for a second video card, should I choose to add another at some point in the future.

So, those more known in rig-building than I, what say you?

I just built a computer for FFXIV, and it's very similar to the links you posted. This was the first computer I've built, so I'm certainly no expert. But, I'll pass on what I do know.

One big difference between your links and what I built:
We got an AMD Phenom II Quad-core 3.4 GHz for $160: AMD Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition Deneb 3.4GHz
With this Mobo ($160): MSI NF980-G65 AM3 NVIDIA nForce 980a SLI HDMI ATX AMD Motherboard

The board supports SLI and has the AM3 socket for an AMD processor -- two things difficult to find in one board. The processor comes with its own heatsink and fan, so no need to buy another. So you could save about $210 ($530 for CPU, mobo, cpu cooler minus $320 for items I listed above), and get a little faster processor.

Also, as an alternative, look at this case: Rosewill CHALLENGER Black Gaming ATX Mid Tower. It's a little cheaper and worked perfectly for the board I listed above.

It took a lot of research for me to find a motherboard that supported both the AM3 socket and SLI, so I thought I'd pass that info on. Hope that helps! :)

I would also like help with this. I'm a complete novice at ordering/looking at Computer parts, but I have people who can help me put a computer together once I have parts.

I have around a £700 (Just over $1000 I believe) budget, and was looking at ordering a PC from dinoPC, but I'm unsure on whether parts that sound/look good, a) will actually work together, and b) will I have enough power from my power supply to do it.

(So even if you can't help me pick components, a quick "Noobs" guide to picking parts would do me lovely!)
