I tend to prefer the Asus motherboards over Gigabyte, but they are a decent motherboard manufacturer. Good call on the USB 3.0 ports and 6BG / sec SATA ports for future expansion. Assuming you don't already have one, you will need a Case ($70), an Optical drive of some sort ($17) and a copy of Windows to run on the machine in addition to what you have listed. For a case, I like to reccommend the Cooler MAster CM 690 series, as they are usually pretty cheap. At the moment the CM690 version 2 is actually about $10 cheaper http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811119215

For an optical drive, any of the 22x DVD drives will work. Here's an LG one for $17 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827136180

Windows, for a gaming machine you want a 64 bit version of Windows 7 of some sort. $99 for 64 bit home Premium. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16832116754

That video card is kind of a no name brand with a less than steller warranty. It will probably work, I wouldn't buy it personally.

I'd go with the PNY. It's a little mroe spendy than the Asus card they have listed, but it has a lifetime warranty.

You'd get more bang for the buck by going with a quad core AMD, such as the X4 640.
$105 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103871
It's about half the price of the i5-660, and about 10% more performance.

Or go with closer to the same price, and about 70% more performance.
$198 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103851

You would also need a good motherboard for it..
$130 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813130269

You could also get a 1TB drive for $10 more than the 500GB you have listed.

I will be upgrading soon myself but I noticed you are looking for the same ram type. Check out this, free 8 gig flash drive too with a mail in rebate. OCZ ftw

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820227586

Cheaper, sexier, free stuff.

Just a suggestion, GL

*Edit: On a side note I agree with the post above, hexacore ftw?

Never buy OCZ ram, ever. It's on my "no-buy" list. we purchased about 120 sticks of OCZ DDR2, and we have had to RMA literally 75 sticks, some of them more than once. It was all one model, and maybe it was a bad lot, but I won't ever buy ram from them again. Just not worth the risk.

I tend to prefer intel CPU's over AMD, but you can get a higher end AMD for the same price than a mid range Intel, and both will do the job.

The case you have listed will work, its got kind of a pain in the *** layout though. The drive rails and toolless design of other cases are more than worth the $30 price difference. Your computer case is the one component you will likely have for years longer than anythign else in this build, so it makes sense to get a good one.

Thanks Kaolian. I just spoke to a friend who builds computers for a living, and he is suggesting that I stick with the i5 even though it has a much lower benchmark, because it can be overclocked to perform better than the AMD, and is more optimized towards gaming while the AMD would be more suited towards graphic design. What do you think about that?

Also, if I wanted to spend $50 more on a CPU, what should I get?

The intel chips break down into I3, I5, I7 socket 1156 and I7 Socket 1366. basically in that order, low to high end speed and capability. The higher end Socket 1366 Core i7's bench faster than all of the AMD chips out at the moment, but to get to a socket 1366 Core i7 even at the lower range you are talking a minumum of $287 for the processor plus another $50 for the larger board. That gives you a quad core with hyperthreading processor for a total of 8 cores to the 4 cores of the Core i5 you were considering, but at a lower clock rate unless you pay alot more than $287. The socket 1366 motherboards all have 6 ram slots to the Socket 1156's 4, so you gain another distinct ram channel, which comes in useful for gaming.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115225 is the lowest end Core i7 Socket 1366 processor.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131641 is the lowest end motherboard I'd put that processor in.

There are also hexacore Core i7 processors (6 cores with hyperthreading for a total of 12 cores), but they start in the high $700's.

Edit: So long story short, unless you want to spend more than $50 more, you should stay with the I5 you have specified.

The AMD overclocks faster than the i5 as well - about 30-40%.

But a little about overclocking.. I've seen it cause more problems than it solves. It's better to stay at stock speeds with a faster CPU than to mess around and deal with instability.

Agreed. Unless you have a dedicated water cooling setup on the board chipset, CPU, ram and video card and know exactly what you are doing AND are willing to rebuy your entire computer if you melt it, stay away from overclocking. If nothing else even the best water cooling setup won't prevent your components ffrom failing earlier thant hey would have from overvoltage.

Although I really like the i7's.. AMD is providing the best performance for the price. I really like how they're headed since the athlon/phenom 2's.

Hey guys,

I had to put off the PC for a bit. It's a month later and I'm getting ready to start ordering parts. Any changes you would make to the original layout?

Also, what's the deal with the new Nvidia chips? Any idea if my configuration will be compatible with them once they are out?

Thanks!

Should all still be relevent. The new processors for Intel don't come out until February 2011 at the earliest. Which Nvidia chips in particular are you referring to?

Here is a socket 1366 i7 930 Processor for $199 if you have a Microcenter near you.

Hmm, nevermind, looks to be out of stock or the deal is over.
