FFXIV Graphics distortion - Help pleaseFollow

#1 Sep 08 2010 at 7:20 PM Rating: Decent
I've been playing the FFXIV open beta all weekend and its worked great. But I moved back to my dorm and got the newest update and a lot of the graphics are distorted, like big green and brown lines where fences are suppose to be and blue spots where a rock was. I updated the drivers on my video card and still nothing, the only other thing i can think to do is uninstall and reinstall, which would take weeks here at school. Help pleaseeeee!

Specs:
Vista 64 bit
Core 2 quad core 2.83 GHz
ATI Radeon HD 4800 series, 512MB
6GB RAM

If you go to the start menu and type in Dxdiag and run all the directX tests do they all pass successfully? Can you run any other 3D games at the moment without issues? Are the issues present as soon as you start the game, or do they show up only after the card has been working for a little while?

Have you cleaned the dust out of your computer recently, and are you certain the fan still works on your video card.

If it's only happening in FFXIV I'd lean towards FFXIV got corrupted somehow. Maybe see if you can downlaod and run the FFXIV benchmark and see if that looks correct. that uses the same graphics engine. If that works, you know it is your game installation. If that also has issues, you know it is somethign related to the video card installation or hardware.

ATI drivers are notorious for sucky installations, so you may want to uninstall the driver completely, run one of the ATI driver clean utilities out there, then try a fresh reinstall of the latest driver pack.

Ran Dxdiag, everything checked out fine.

I ran the benchmark and the graphics were messed up just like in game, nice call. I can play sc2, WoW, Demigod, and they all run fine, its just the graphics for FFXIV.

I do actually need to dust out my computer, my graphics card does get quiet hot, although the fan still does work.

So you think I should just try to uninstall and reinstall?

Thanks for all the help and the quick response, really appreciate it. :)

I've had that kind of thing happen twice, once when my video card was on the slow decline, and once when the game itself got corrupted. If it was the video card, though, other 3D games would be doing the same thing.

So I found out it was my graphics card thats dieing. Playing sc2 the graphics have been steadily getting worse, and demigod is unplayable, looks like someone took a paintbrush to the screen and made a rainbow. Going to buy a nvidea geforce 470, hope its enough to run FFXIV fine.

Well, sorry the card died but at least its an excuse to upgrade! The 470 will run FFXIV and most other games just fine. Its a nice card
