Not long ago, I was using the comp and the screen went all wonky.

Remember when you didn't put the game cartidge in your old, say, VIC-20 properly and you got lines and odd graphics displayed on the screen? It's like that. Mouse is usually visible and moveable, but won't click anything.

One or more re-boots later it will fix itself, but I'd like to get to the root cause.

1) Yes, temp is fine (according to BIOS)
2) Yes all fans running and no dirt/dust in case
3) All connections are good

So, WTH is going on here?

ETA: It does this on start-up, too.

Thats usually a sign that the video card is beginning to fail. If it is still underwarrenty might want to get it replaced.

What Kao means is that if the planets are still in alignment then you still have time to prepare your offering and sacrifice to the e-repair gods, otherwise just buy a new card. Never bother with a video card warranty unless it's still under the store 30-90 day policy, too much time and effort wasted waiting for something you can easily pick up at a Best Buy.

Getting a new vid card tomorrow: gForce 6800 series. I'll let y'all know if this solves the problem.

I've recently helped a friend with his failing graphics. Oddly enough, it turned out to be his RAM rather than his video card! It may not be the same in your case, but you may want to have a look at this link here if you're still having issues. It may give you a bit of info that could help:
