Hello.

I have recently upgraded from dial-up(lol) to Hughesnet highspeed internet, and this is where the trouble began. Pre-Hughesnet, I would only have connection problems every now and then, and when I tried to do too much at once, which was a main reason for upgrading. Post-Hughesnet, I have constant lag while playing ffxi, and I have no idea why. About a 2-3 second lag for some reason. I notice that the S(I believe that is the send?) is unusually low compared to the R(Ex: S 58, R 350)
Any idea why? I know I have a 200MB downloading limit, but I dont think that would effect general gameplay, would it? Ive tried clearing old junk off my computer, and defragmenting it. No luck.

Satelite internet is not the ebst for gaming by any means. While you have a huge download limit your uploads are capped way way down, which is causing the lag. Unfortunatly the only fix is back to dial up or get real high speed internet instead of satelite, but I understand thats not possible for some.

I hate to bump this again, but its killing me.
There is no way I can get rid of my current internet, atleast for 2 years.
Is there anyway possible to fix it? Or atleast maybe make it slightly better?
Like anything I could do to make the upload cap larger..Hell, I don't honestly know.

The problem isn't with your upload capacity, it's with due by delays incurred by the simple fact that the geosynchronous satellite you're using is at least 42,164 Km (26,199 miles) away from you, round trip is double that and even at close to light speed, that's a nice chunk of waiting right there. Also, add some major delays having to do with multiplexing, as your data is buffered in order to queue it with thousand of other satellite subscribers' data before it's down/uplinked to/from earth. Two to three second delays are normal and not avoidable.

So the lag you get is inherent from the technology and there's nothing you can do about it, short of violating the laws of physics.

You could have your contract broken on a Quality Of Service clause; check your terms of service.

Do you have a phone? If so then unlimited dial up internet should only be about 10.00 to 20.00 a month in most states. I would just use that. Use your satellite for the version updates, downloading torrents, etc. FFXI was made for dial up speeds albeit the version updates can be horrendous but this is what I suggest. You should have posted this in the main FFXI forum honestly, I have seen a few satellite threads there. Google them perhaps. Tons of people with Hughes I believe.
