So I have some programs on my old XP (32 bit) computer that i would like to transfer to my new Win7 (64 bit) machine. I know the 32 bit stuff will not run native on 64 bit, but I see that Windows 7 has a feature where you can select programs to run in 32 bit mode.
How well does this work? These would be some Autodesk Cad programs I want to transfer.

Secondly, what is the best and cheapest method of transferring programs? Is it as simple as connecting an rj45/ethernet cord between the two, therefore being able to "look" inside once pc from the other and select things to transfer?
I know there are some programs one can buy for this (Windows recommends one), but is it really necessary?

Most programs aren't like wow, where you can just copy your wow install folder onto another device(usb stick) plug it in another computer and be up and running. They tend to make registry changes, toss files here there and everywhere so just a transfer like that won't generally work, you'll miss pieces of the install, best way to "transfer" a program to a new computer is to insert your installation disks and let it install. Might be able to preserve your customizations / UI if you made changes by copying those files over.

Fastest file-transfer (migration) from an old computer to the new one is to temporarily install the hard-drive in the new computer, do the transfer of what you want (music, pictures etc) and take out the drive for the original computer.

While you could copy the programs over to the new OS it would be better to reinstall any actual programs so that they create fresh registries in Windows 7. Some programs may run into problems if copied straight over. Settings and saved files for the programs can be copied over directly. barring the necessary cables and computer know-how to install the hard drive temporarily you could just copy these with an external hard drive, thumb drive or over a network.
