My first problem with Windows 7Follow

I booted up this morning and same as usual, went to brush my teeth, wash etc. while it loaded windows. When I got back, there was a black screen, no icons save for a white taskbar and the windows (start) symbol. When I moused over the start symbol, the win7 eggtimer came up. Nothing (ctrl+alt+delete, left or right mouse clicks) did anything so I had to go for a hard reboot.

2nd time of booting, same thing happened. I have a G15 keyboard that doesn't get power until after the boot process so I missed the Safe Mode option.

After digging out my ps/2 keyboard, I restarted and got into Safe Mode. Everything's perfect so I rebooted and tried again.

4th time of booting, Windows loads perfectly.

Does anyone know what might have happened and how I can prevent it in future?

might have been on hibernation or the like know it did that with 98 xp etc and occasionally would hang up during "boot" afterwards. I would turn off the feature if it does indeed exist and go to shutting down/booting normlly if that was indeed the case

Really? I have a G15 as well and I have no trouble using it as a standard USB keyboard while booting.

Really and truly. I don't know whether it's just the first release of the g15 that does this or if it's only my keyboard that might be faulty. It's totally conceivable that it's mine only though. When I realised the problem I invested in a £10 Trust keyboard which I keep close by, just in case, so it's no bother if it's just mine.

I posted the problem on another site, where they recommended doing a memtest and the HD check, so I'll do that now.

EDIT: Btw, satrn, I have no idea what you said. Please try to use punctuation so that what you write is helpful.

I have a first gen G15 as well, and the way I got it to work during boot was to set the USB ports to BIOS control instead of OS in the BIOS settings. It will still work normally in Windows if you set it to BIOS control.

I'd also crack open the case and dust it out with canned air. Static can build up in the dust during winter months, and a good dusting will fix a multitude of problems.

But if the PC cannot build up heat from the dust how will Leodis stay warm during the cold, cold winter months?

Easy - central heating. It's killing the planet but it's keeping me warm at least.

Nice tip about the BIOS settings, by the way.

I had a similar problem after installing Linux as a dual boot on my machine. I think it had something to do with RAM and hibernation settings. Being I had accidentally hibernated both OSes and then when I tried to start Windows 7 it was mildly gibbled likely due to something being messed up with the saved state of the laptop from when it went into hibernation. I am guessing something similar may have occurred with your computer which can easily be fixed by either not using Hibernate or more likely it will be an isolated incident as it was with my laptop. I also started in safe mode and the problem seemed to sort itself out.

Depending on who made the pc, Turn off hibernation in the bios or system settings.
That particular problem has been around since win 98 hit the shelves. Windows does not like hibernate. It messes up the o/s ram or whatever and causes problems.

This only becomes a problem if the PC doesn't have enough free swap space (forget the windows term for it) to dump the ram to when it powers down. Rarely a problem if you maintain your PC decently or it is relatively new. It does make me wonder if the OP had used the Upgrade or a fresh install of windows 7.
