I put this PC together a bit over a year ago now, has never given me any issues.

I was just grabbing a new tag in Whitegate when my computer froze solid. Powered it off, turned it back on and it wouldnt even post. No beep, no error beeps, no signal to monitor. Fans are spinning and lights are flashing fine (Single rail power supply so I doubt that is the issue). Unfortunately my motherboard doesn't have diagnostic LEDs..

I took everything off the motherboard, reseated everything with no change. Tried to boot with only cpu, memory and video card with no change. Reset the CMOS for lulz and that didn't help. The PC I'm on now is rather elderly so I can't swap even video cards or memory to test, but I seriously doubt either is the issue.

I wouldn't mind a second opinion before I hand my christmas shopping damaged credit card over to newegg for new parts.

Sounds like one of the capacitors on the motherboard died. Open the case and run your finger over the top of each capacitor, if you find one with a raised top (feels like a bump instead of a flat section) then you will have to replace the motherboard (or solider a new one on).

I have to agree with SHaowstrike, if you removed all the cards etc and still didnt get a peep from the beep codes it sounds like it is a motherboard issue. I dunno anything about soldering capacitors on it though. If it has good recent type ram etc I would look at buying
a similar motherboard.

If possible and what you have isnt an Asus, Msi, or similar name brand board I would definitely consider paying an extra dollar or two to get one. If it was just replace it and pray it doesn't happen again.

I would third the opinion of it being a motherboard issue. Video cards can cause this issue, but the only way to test that is either A) Have onboard video backup to try booting from or B) Have a backup video card you know is functioning.

I will also second the idea of buying an ASUS motherboard. Msi isn't bad either, but I prefer ASUS for most of my machines and they never let me down.

I'm glad we have a consensus. Thanks for the replies. Now lets just hope my motherboard going out didn't damage my CPU or Memory.

Now might be a good time to upgrade to an I7 processor of sorts...

Add another vote for a board problem and replacing it with an ASUS.

If it were a video problem the system would emit a series of beeps. Phoenix BIOS (probably one of the most common) usually use on screen codes these days with an audible beep for video problems.

Also, if you are going to physically touch a cap that is suspected to be bad, make sure the power is removed and wait awhile, a long while. I have seen bad caps hold a charge for well over 24 hours.

The current only flows through the contact poles that are soldiered to the motherboard. Touching the top won't put you in contact with the voltage stored in the capacitor, I do agree with unplugging the PC first though.

Speaking from experience, you can be shocked by touching a cap anywhere, depending on how it's been damaged.

So I decided on a classic (in pc terms anyway) series to rep my old dead motherboard with - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813136072

Back in the day I was an ABIT fanboy, so it just feels wrong to buy an ASUS board lol.

Just remember, you get what you pay for in the end. For about $25 more (only $5 more after rebate), you can get a far superior product from a rock solid brand.

I agree with Ryneguy, I just upgraded my PC from an ABIT board to an ASUS one and I love it.

I know I'm chiming in late with my opinion but try the video card in a friends computer, my money is that that is what has failed.
