Router problemFollow

This has been going on for a long while now. While the internet on my computer is fine, for everyone else it just goes off at times and I always have to unplug/replug the router to make it work again for them. I tried getting a new Linksys router to replace the old one, but it wouldn't connect to the internet unless it hooks up to the old Linksys router that I'm trying to replace like an add-on. I've tried what seems like everything and it's either only I get constant internet or no one gets it. Now even my Xbox360 and PS3 are suddenly disconnecting as well.

I've checked the modem and it shows that I still get internet so it has to be the routers. My internet provider is Comcast.

I'm at my wit's end on this and could use some help.

You will need a new router. I've had this exact issue several times. One PC being able to stay connected, usually the directly wired one, while the others wouldn't work.
But my router is supplied by my ISP so every issue i had with my router they came and replaced it.

You can replace it but I'm not sure how.You should try using google to look up that information. Best of luck.

you have comcast so am assuming here that you have cable correct. I have had two different problems at different times, One was a had a bad splitter. One that wasn't designed for cable modems, the solution call comcast or whomever your provider is and buy a pair of them make sure which outlet is the one for your cable and only have 1 between the primary feed and your cable modem. The other I had the a lot of people wont see unless they live in a humidy rainy type climate is water was getting into the exterior cable through leaky connections, and i finally found it when my dog chewed thru the cover and it dripped water for a while. I replaced the cable with some better low resistance stuff all good. Lastly yes there could be a wireless router issue but id check the other two first. What may be happening is the Game system other pc's are getiing an IP 3. they sign off then they attempt to connect to the same one after it has been reassigned to another device etc. eventually the other pc or game system cannot connect. You also may try assigning each device a router ip addy. Google it for your specific router but it isnt that difficult.

Just asking because I didn't see it mentioned. You are power cycling the modem when you're connecting the new router right?

Well yeah. I tried to have the new router work by itself, but it refuses to work unless I connect it through the old router, and even then it won't always work wireless for everyone else, but it'll work just fine for my computer.

Do you know how to set up a router properly? im asking because if you are piggybacking the routers one going into another the second is acting like a switch on the firsts isp. It doesnt sound near right. If you set up the new router correctly it should work solo if it works in unison or piggybacked.

Secondly are both routers linksys and are they the same make and model? ie wireless g or n? or do you have a wireless access point or the wireless g broadband router?

On starting setup, disconnect the router hook a pc directly to the router, and the new router to the modem.

goto start, run then type in cmd and hit enter then in the black box type ipconfig/all

in the first line you are looking for adapter address listed as physical address or local area connection.

open a web page, and connected or not hit the red x stop button

type in the address bar 192.168.1.1
for user name and password hit ok

depending on the version of software you are using on the router i have 2 sets of instructions. Ill list them both but if you don not see what I am talking about look at the next set.

SET 1:
From the setup page click the mac address clone tab
in the mac address clone section click the enable button
if you have done this correctly the number you wrote down earlier will match
click save settings

SET 2
from the setup page click the advanced tab
when the next page loads click the mac address clone tab
on this one you have to manually enter the physical or local adress in the boxes
click on apply thencontinue if need be

close all windows, shut off pc.
unplug your router then unplug the modem
now wait 30s and plug the modem in and wait for eveything (the lights) to be on
now plug in the router and wait for it to get on and stabilize
now start the pc
if that was the roblem you should now be able to see the internet, if not hmm tell me what it does

I just put in the installation disk and try to go along with the instructions. It gets to "finding network" and it never finds it unless I hook it along with the old router.

They are WRT54GS and WRT54GS2 Linksys models. Wireless G broadband routers. The set up is like this now:

Modem -> old router -> new router -> PC

are all the other devices wireless with the exception of the wired pc?

if they are, you may not have a network. Try not running the setup, hooking up the router cables/modemn and pc power them up, and open internet explorer.

goto page 192.168.1.1 what i want you to look at on both routers is the ip address if one is 192.168.2.1 and the second is 192.168.1.1 id like you to change the new routers isp numbers to match it isnt hard, but you may have a conflict with the mosems ip address on the new modem as they are different models.

I had the same problem when i swapped from a belken router to the same router you just bought the wrt54g2, it had the same ip address as the motorola surfboard modem i have. if you can do that, you may find that everything will now work.

under basic setup at the ineternet explorer address 198.162.1.1 you will see a box at the bottom with that address(192.168.1.1)what i want you to change it to is 198.162.4.1 save these changes and write that number down. If you have stalled previously on the network problem after a reboot of the router modem and pc you should now be online.

also to gain access from now on when you wish to goto the acess page in internet explorer you will need to type that number.
