Well now Elne just may need that new computer after all. Actually this is Elne posting as Jonwin since I'm too frustrated to sign out and log myself in.

First nothing seem to have gone right today, but that a different subject and should be posted were I can say nasty things about being put on hold for 30 minutes.

The one thing I had to look forward today was getting 2 gigs of ram Jonwin allowed me to order, since his computer only needed a new power supply. I had to do some research since I had last worked on my computer well over a year ago and wasn't sure what memory it took. Once I determine I was limited to DDR 2700 and 2 gigs. I order the proper ram for the Elite motherboard, we had replace my Asus when I fried it couple years back.

Wen I open the case I was faced with a very think layer of dust over everything. I looked for my old brush that I knew was static free but it wasn't to be found. So I used one Jonwin had in his toolbox and installed the new memory.

Hooked evrything back up and powered up. Computer powered down 2 seconds later on it own. Hmm... I try again, same result, so back to pulling out all the cords and check to see if I had seated the memory sticks as well as I thought. Now the fans all ran, when I powered the computer up, but nothing else. Check to see if I had unseated any of the boards or cables, only one I wasn't sure of and it didn't seem to have any responding place to fit. So try again still fans work, but nothing else as shown by the fact that my keyboard and optical mouse don't light up. Not even the a beep from the case speaker to give me an idea of error code.

So here I am waiting for Jonwin to get home so I can tell him I guess I'm going to be building that new computer after all. Thankfully I found I had a better power supply in my case then I had thought, 660w max :) It should give me enough power for all but the most demanding build I could dream of affording.

Since if I build a new computer, I'm going to want to go with 4 gigs of memory, I can just give the new momery to Jonwin at this rate.

By the way I find the add for Birth control pills that pop up when I got to the site ironic with the multi page thread over in the asylum. I don't think Jonwin has to worry on that front, since I made sure there wouldn't be any more little Elne's running around long before I met him.

Here is one idea you might try, go and install the old ram and see if it boots up. If it does, perhaps you do not have the correct ram. if it doesnt hmm there be a quandry, going from what you said the psu(power supply) is working, perhaps you could have made contact with the mobo and discharged static to it. the other thing that pops into my head right off is that the memory slots now have some of the dust you brushed away that fell into them. Remove the old memory if they dont work, gently blow into those slots if you do not have canned air makeing sure no moisture goes into the slots reseat the ram and retry. if that doesnt work, listen to see if you get a beep code then google the beep code for your motherboard.

Lastly if you are looking at a new pc, and im guessing your budget to be 500 or less look at egghead at some of their barebones systems, ibuypower.com for their systems minus the monitior etc and cyberpower.com. both make good inexpensive pc's using brand name and quality interals and their pc will have a guarantee that they back up, well I can vouch for Ibuypower anyhow, as their first system had a problem 6 motnhs after I owned it and it was replaced the cyberpower system My dad has hasn't messed up so I assume their warranty works as well.

We are just going to take it to the shop and have my friend barry work on the computer and get it running for me again. As long as I make sure that he understands my need for a good video card and as much memory as i can afford, to run LOTR:O

I should have my computer back in a week. They recently lost one employee, when his band went on tour, so I can't expect a quick turn around. Now if they have a use computer that fits my needs, I just may buy it.

Take some canned air and dust it out really really good.

My computer "died" last month. So did Lahurah's. It was seasonal dust and static. Just taking them outside and dusting all the gunk off every inch of the motherboard and the fans fixed it.
