Cheaper Windows 7Follow

#1 Nov 05 2009 at 1:01 AM Rating: Default
I'm currently building a new rig and I appear to be at a fork in the road.

Windows 7 is around $300 (Australian) for the whole OS (not the upgrade). For me, it seems like a lot of cash to fork out for a dam OS.
Is it possible to get a (possibly pirate) version of XP installed onto my computer. Then make a new partition on my hardrive for the exact same OS, thus having a dual boot of the same OS.
So then I can buy the new windows 7 upgrade for only $50 (because I'm a uni student) and install that over one of the versions of XP?

I'm either exactly right or no where near the mark, I just need someone to point it out for me.

Yeah that should probably work. Personally I've had an old dell CD that I've been using as a starting point to install XP on for ages now.

You may want to check this thread before you buy Windows 7, you can get a digital download version which can easily be converted into an ISO for $33 (AUD).

Windows will let you 'upgrade' from a pirated copy of an OS?

Um... is that new, because I didn't think you could do that.

Upgrading from a pirated version to a newer pirated version can be done... not sure if you can go from a pirated version and upgrade to a retail OS.

It's probably possible, at no time during the upgrade did the installer ask for the key of the legal copy of XP I was upgrading from.

Can't upgrade from XP to 7. Hell, you can't even upgrade from certain versions of Vista.

See if your school has some sort of software deal. I've gotten Office 2007 ultimate for $60 (normally about $600) and 2 complete versions (not upgrades) of Windows 7 Pro for free.

You can upgrade, it just doesn't keep all of your data on the OS HD. The steps to upgrade an XP machine are basically the same as performing a clean install, you just need the older OS on the HD to prove to the installer that it's an upgrade.

You also can't "upgrade" your RC version to the paid version; you have to do a clean install.

I sent a fairly nasty letter to M$ about that one.

I'm currently updating my RC to the full windows 7. I'd probably find it annoying that I have to do a full install if I wasn't planning on it already.
