POL crashes on fresh WinXP installFollow

#1 Aug 13 2009 at 7:54 PM Rating: Decent
hey everyone! all this talk about XIV has got me itchin to play XI again!

I got my PC up and running again, put a fresh install of Windows XP on, got all the proper drivers installed, installed PlayOnline, started it up.....and it crashes every time before the program even loads. I get the message "PlayOnline viewer has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." I was on POL's chat support a few times, and they suggested bypassing my router, disabling my firewall, and downloading the Vista version. Nothing is working.

What on earth could prevent POL from loading on a fresh OS install?? Has anyone else had this problem?

Hard to say as i dont use PoL for any games i currently use, have you tried hooking directly to the modemn as they suggested bypassing the router? Could it also be directx version problem. again i dont use or run pol, so dont know the sys requirements but make sure you are above the minimums, make sure the drivers you downloaded arent conflicting and if all else fails try Warcraft, am sure you will love it and if your pc is even halfway decent should have you happily playing along in no time

Yeah, i've tried everything they told me to do. my PC far exceeds the system requirements and directx drivers are up to date. as for WOW - no thanks ;p I've got a lvl 63 Samurai on XI that I really wanna get back into.

hope you haven't been gone too long or that SAM is long gone and deleted.

No help from me...you could ask in the FFXI general if anyone is having any POL issues, and you will know wither or not it is you, or something on SE's end.

Did you get all the goodies from the Microsoft Windows Update website? Make sure all the Express and Custom installs are downloaded and done with; it could be an older driver conflicting or something weird like that.

Also, you did install your video card driver? Smiley: lol My POL didn't crash, but I wondered why the heck my FFXI looked like **** when I got it running after my last OS refresh then I realized I never actually installed the Nvidia driver.

This is absolutely absurd. I'm at my wit's end. I can't possibly think of a single thing that would prevent POL from running on a fresh XP install. I've scoured forums and tried every workaround.

I've installed every update available from Microsoft.
I've installed my motherboard drivers.
I've installed my video card drivers.
I've bypassed the router.
I've tried running it in "Windows 98 Compatibility Mode"
I've downloaded the Vista-capable version.

And of course POL's tech support is closed for the weekend. Is there *anything* anyone can think of?

This is a good idea. You can..
Go to Device Manager and see if there are any yellow "?". Like your vid card. . . update them drives (I just did a fresh install, and Windows didn't gather the drivers on a few things, I had to do it)

I had the same problem as Catwho. My monitor was all crappy and wasn't working right, until I installed the nividia driver, then all was smooth.
