I was recently upgraded to a nvidia geforce 8400 gs from a 7600 gs oc both have 512 mb ram, problem is now eq runs choppy and laggy, almost seems like I was downgraded.
I regularly 3 box and it seems as bad with one instance as 3, any help on this would be greatly appreciated.

Processor type/speed: amd athalon 64 3800+/2.41ghz
Total Hard drive space/Free hard drive space: 200gb/109gb
Amount of Ram: 4gb ram showing as 2.75gb (used to show 3.25gb)
Video card type: nvidia geforce 8400 gs
Operating system: xp pro
Computer model number: compaq gx5050
frequency of problem: every log on now

You dont mention whether its agp or pcie for the video slot, nor the which version of friver you were using on the 8400.
as to upgrade or downgrade I seriously doubt an 8400 is considered to be much of an upgrade if at all.
I am not positive, but the 7xxx series was made for winnxp and directx 9 and the 8xxx for the directx 10,
and having said that if i remember correctly the equivalent to the 7600 would have been the 8600 or 8800.

It is indeed very possible that you "downgraded" the overall gpu performance. A step up would have been the 8800 1gb oc+ assuming
the pc you have would accept one or you could find it in your current board type (agp or pcie).

Not knowing specifically which card you went from and went to, it sounds like a sideways trade and you went from a card with dedicated memory to shared memory, which would be a downgrade.

I 2 boxed in EQ with my 7600. I no longer play EQ but upgraded to an 8800 awhile back and just looking at the overall performance it would have run both EQ instances without any problems. I would suggest taking back the 8400 and getting an 8600 or 8800. Just make sure your power supply can handle it. I believe the 8600 and 8800 both require 400W.

With nVidia the second number in the model is almost more important than the first. x600 and x800 are almost always the better cards.

It's a bit confusing to people who don't know better and it would seem logical that a higher number would be better. But a 8800 is a lot better than a 9400.

Post number 4 on this forum seems quite helpful. Also, Tom's Hardware lets you compare results of different cards and someone's already done a =on&prod[2088]=on]comparison for your two.

It seems that both cards are low-range but the 7600 gs comes out on top (marginally). You were duped by Nvidia's marketing strategy, exactly as they intended.

Thank you it did turn out to be the card, found a new 7600 gs oc, and installed it, back to 3-boxing with no lag.

All is well again.Smiley: smile
