Multicolored vertical lines on monitor.Follow

Lately (last 2 months or so), if I go afk with WoW in full screen mode, after 30-45min the screen will go to screensaver, but when i come back, I cannot get the screen to show the desktop or the game. The screen is on, but will just remain black. A simple reboot fixes it though.


Now, yesterday, I went afk and fell asleep with WoW on. My girlfriend was the next to come back the computer and when she turned it on, on the desktop there were a ton of multicolored lines running vertical on my screen. All about 1pixil thick, they are spaced out. Sometimes they are pink sometimes green, just depends, and when I tried to start WoW the computer rebooted (think this may be a blue screen and I just have the option to reboot when it happens checked).

I shoudl mention, when I turn the PC on, in the startup and BIOS these lines are not there. They do not show up until you get to the User login screen for XP.

So I pulled out the graphics and the fan was pretty dusty. So I am hoping maybe a good case cleaning would fix this. I only had enough air to clean out the Graphic fan, and when I put it back in, it seems to work normal. Fan works very well, I dont see smoke, it isn't hot etc.

Wondering how and what I can do to pinpoint whats wrong once I get all the dust out.

Ugh. i mean... I could use a new one, I am barely getting by with my 6600... but ugh.



So, its possible there was just enough damage done to it, though no noticable physical damage?


And, apart from getting qtips and a **** ton of air to all the crevices, is there anything else I can do?


Worse comes to worse I'll throw the badboy in the oven for 5minutes on 300. Read online that can help on a card that is on its last legs. (something about it remelts some parts so that they made proper conductivity)

Update, I turned off the Restart on BSoD.


Got a BSoD upon it tryign to startup WoW (can make this happen everytime)

I didnt go to safe mode... but I did download the latest driver before I read this.


Didnt help anything.


I downloaded speed fan, and it wouldnt tell me the voltage but thank you Shao that was informative.

Another thing though, it shows all my temperature levels at normal, not sure if that matters.


I went to install the power supply... but it is screwed in with these special screws.... guess I need to go to home depot...?


I want to confirm as well, I will have to have my new power supply in before I can put in the Graphics card right?


And, will I be okay downloading the latest drivers for the card now, save it on the desktop, then when I put in the new card, boot up, use the .exe then restart and be good?

I boot into safe mode... the lines are gone.

So, trying the whole uninstall drivers then reinstall thing again.

If it's only the 3-D effects you need to go to Microsoft's website and download the newest version of DirectX and install it also.

So, i was googling and feel I should of mentioned this...


I have a HP d530 CMT and from what I read, it has a somewhat custom PSU setup and that most standard ATX PSU (which I have:BFG ATX12v 550w) will not fit. I am not wanting to unopen it to see, find out, then pay a 15% restocking fee to return it.


I am also, since this PC is older, wanting to make sure the PNG GeForce GTS 250 1024MB will fit and work and is compatible.

Is it a PCI Slot video card? If so it will fix all current computers, it's the AGP and PCI-E that require special slots and the older motherboards can't handle the 8x AGP cards and don't have PCI-E slots.

Oh yeah, Best Buy never charges a restocking fee, at least for me.

My old card was a Nvidia Geforce 6600 GT

My mobo I have no idea. I think it is stock as it has HP logo on it.


Basically here is my problem, I need to make sure that the new card will work, and that my new PSU will fit (which it wont as I think the shape is different than what I have in my case.)

I think the card will work as the requirements on the back say: PCI-E or PCI-E2.0 compliant one dual width x16 graphics slot.


Nvidia's site says the 6600: PCI Express AGP 8X


I googled x16 graphics slot and I dont have one of those on my mobo. Going by this: http://www.pcmag.com/image_popup/0,1871,s=27244&iid=178013,00.asp

I have my 6600 plugged into a AGP slot, and on my board there are 4 PCI slots below. I see nothing resembling a x16

A PCI-E slot looks like a black version of a PCI slot but it's about an inch and a half longer. You are definitely going to have to take the new card back and exchange it, since the PCI and PCI-E are not interchangeable.

Give me the model number of your HP PC and I'll try to find info on what motherboard it uses. There shouldn't be an issue with the power supply plugs but you never know.

No matter what you will have to upgrade the power supply, graphic cards today take power directly from the power supply and nothing lower than a 450w supply will be able to support it and the rest of the PC hardware.

Sorry you had to make an unnecessary trip.
