Quad Core? lolFollow

#1 Jul 16 2009 at 12:08 PM Rating: Decent
I just bought a new PC and it has some kind of intel i7 thing that's supposed to be really good, or something. Anyways, my friend says that by default my "quad core" processor only has one core active, and that I'd have to go into the BIOS and activate the other ones manually. Now , personally, I think this guy is a ******* that probably does not know what he is talking about. I went into the BIOS and couldn't figure out a way to "activate cores" so I'm assuming he just didn't know what he was talking about but I would really like to get the best performance possible out of my new PC so any experts please reply.

I also got a 1 gig Nvidia 250 GTS video card, or something like that. Do I need to do anything special to make it work better? So far this PC doesn't seem that much better than my old e-machine(have yet to install any games) but my old e-machine sounded like a lawn mower when it was running and this new PC is very quiet.

all 4 cores should be on, not sure on the i7, only one i heard was that some AMD that have 3 cores can be unlocked into 4, but make sure you update your drives for the 250 GTS

Link for it just use Option 2

I have a 10 year old TI calculator that's better than most e-machines.

All four cores should be running when you get your box. Your friend has no idea what he's talking about.

On the other hand, the OS may not be optimized to take advantage of all four cores. Are you running a 64 bit OS? A 32 bit OS on that processor is like trying to navigate dirt roads with a Formula 1 race car. Sure, it gets the job done, but it's a waste of potential.

Make sure that you have Intel's Turbo Boost and Hyper Threading active. I'd assume that they are either OEM on the machine or downloadable from the Microsoft website.

yea, it's 64 bit. Otherwise it wouldn't be able to utilize the 8 gigs of ram I put in it. I haven't had time to play any games yet - that's when I'll decide if I like it or not. I bought it from HP and customized it a little. I upgraded my lolemachine a while back with some more ram and a new video card - but the video card died on me recently so I decided I was gonna buy something with a lot of horsepower.

I approve of this post. Smiley: nod

It has nothing to do with the fact that they keep the lights on in my apartment. Nothing at all.

Buy HP stuff anyway.

Is HP a really good place to work? They are headhunting in the area...

It IS possible for some functions to be locked down when you get an OEM system, cores shouldn't be one. Real easy way to check, go into the BIOS on the system and see if there IS a way to disable it. You can even call HP and ask them to walk you through it. Verify that the cores are all active, then show that to your mor- I mean, ill-informed friend.

By the by, the only things I've seen locked down were overclocking options for the most part, but there was a time Dell shipped mobos with quad core support locked down for whatever insane reason.

Both are marketing fluff that are pretty much completely useless.

It's STILL largely just a waste of electricity to have more than two cores on a CPU in nearly all cases.

At any rate, your friend is a moron, ignore him.

There's a certain point where you don't really derive any benefit from more computing horsepower. This point with non gaming applications occurs around the point processors start to cost more than $24 and GPUs start to cost more than $50.

Every dollar more you spend on a CPU after that is to allow for it's use in either extremely specific situation, math heavy sim games (not "The Sims"), video encoding, etc. Every dollar more you spend on a GPU is largely to allow for playable frame rates at high resolutions in games.

Good luck.

Actually, your Core i7 (nehalem or bloomsfield) "quad core" has 8 cores. 4 physical cores with 4 additional virtual "hyperthreading" cores.

For example, if you look to the right of my desktop you can see all 8 of my cores in operation with my 12 GB ram.

Edit: whoops, thats the old pic
Screenshot

They are all on and enabled by default. The only way you can disable them is to go into windows and manually set processor core affinity for a given application via processes in the Ctrl+alt+del task manager.

You can verify all 8 cores are present by going into control panel:system and then to device manager and checking under system devices.

So yes. Your friend is full of sh*t.

Good eye, but it's actually just a split second before the shells exit the barrel. You can see the shockwaves int he water fromt he other two turrets and if you look really close you can see the third turret shockwave just starting to form.
