Reinstall windows. Really. Vastly less time consuming that trying to remove something.

Thanks for the help.

I would seem I do not have my XP disk.

How can i get a copy of XP prof?

And when I reinstall, will I need to download drivers, or SP's?

That's unfortunate.

You could buy one. You could also attempt to acquire one through illicit means, downloading it via a bit torrent tracker from the Pirate Bay or the like, but that would rob Microsoft of valuable revenue.

And when I reinstall, will I need to download drivers, or SP's?

Possibly. What you should do is burn an Ubuntu Live CD before you do anything, because it will let you do everything you need to do with your computer until you fix windows. You may reinstall windows an not have network support, for instance, which would put a damper on downloading the needed network drivers.

Good luck.

Thanks for the help Smash.

So, I have had an Ubuntu CD laying around for awhile luckily, so i have that just in case.

I downloaded a WinXP disc online (I have a OEM version I think. I have a key, just no disc). I installed windows from the boot cd.

So where to from here?

Everything is as I left it... except the cd was SP2, instead of SP3 like I had. All my setting are the same, I still have the same programs.

I am running anti-virus and spybot(which has come back with nothing a few times now). Everything works right now.

What did i accomplish reinstalling windows?

All you did was *repair* your current Windows. What Smash meant was a format, and reinstallation of Windows. Vastly different than just repairing it.

I see.

What would the best suggestion be to move about 11GB of important data/music?

I do not have a USB... is burning 11 discs my only option?

Okay so I updated the title but...

I think I did something...

and not good...

I am trying to sort out what drivers I need now for this fresh installation, and I am working on installing my nVidia ones..

The problem is, under Device Manager, it does not recognize 4 things, Ethernet Controller, Multimedia Audio Controller, Network Controller, and Video Controller(VGA Compatible).

Now, how do I find out where to get these drivers? I assume the Video is my nVidia, but how do I find out those other 3?

And yes, after some Google, I found out I just jumped way to deep... Now I need to get this working...

edit: I downloaded what I beleive to be my ethernet drivers and my nvidia drivers on my laptop. Now, I had thought that I could simply burn them to a cd, and put them on my desktop.

Not so, I get this message saying some ifo will be lost, etc when moving it to the cd.

1- definately get a USB key theyre like 10$ for 2GB

2- The drivers you are missing are likely to be onboard components, is your computer a brand computer or a home-made one? Of its a brand computer look up on the manufacturer's website.

If its not a brand one open up your case and find your motherboard model. Then first loo in your disks you should have one that includes all the basic drivers for it, if you dont have a disk you have the model number so hop online and search on the board maker's website they will hav ethe drivers for you.

As for burning and losing files just burn the raw zip file to a CD, just find your ethernet driver first and start from there. (burn the ethernet driver driver only and download the rest directly from your main comp)

These are about 99.99999999999% all motherboard chip set drivers, readily available from your motherboard manufacturer's website.

I mean this sincerely thank you both very much.

As for my computer... I bought it used from a friend. I believe it was purchased from HP, it is an HP d530C. I believe the mobo is HP too... but I am having a hard time finding the model number. It has a few after market parts I believe, such as my old nVidia 6600 GT, and a Wireless internet card (which I don't use any longer, as I am hardwired to the router). The ports for ethernet on the back, and audio look like they are in the mobo, so i assume that would mean it is all HP drivers, I just need the model number, which is evading me.

I went to HP's website, and found my computer which had a list of all the drivers. It was... Thissite. Would this be the appropriate site for me?

Now, I would assume, for Ethernet drivers, i would get the "Network", as it is labeled.

I will try again to burn them...

I should mention, I have no original discs due to having to move a ton this last year. I only got XP due to torrent, although it has an OEM sticker on top, which accepted my serial number.

Smash... You mentioned ubuntu... Would now possibly be a good time to pop that disc in to get my internet? or would the drivers I download be different than the ones I need for XP Pro?

I found a barcode sticker on my motherboard, but I am unable to discern what numbers are what.

I am Googling them, but figured I would post in case someone is ablle to make better sense of this.

Under the barcode: IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII
P89260A9VQJ0VD
sp#358701 AS#347887-002
Rev-0A

It is arranged pretty much like that on the sticker, note that all of the "0" are zero's.

I went with Broadcom NetXtreme Gigabit Drivers for Microsoft Windows XP/2000.

I remember seeing that (don't remember the tag "for xp/2000) in my add/remove programs for awhile.

So hopefully that is a step in the right direction.

I ALSO put each driver in a .rar and I was able to burn them without that message I was getting (before, I should have mentioned, I was just dragging and dropping into the cd to burn). So hopefully I will be able to install these. I also zipped Malwarebytes and Firefox to the cd, so hopefully I will be all setup to download NoScript and the rest of my drivers.

I couldn't open them because you can't open .rar's in XP...

So, there went my last idea so far..

Everything I am reading online says I should be able to download drivers and burn to cd, or put on a USB drive.

I do not have USb, but I can do cd's, the problem is, when I just drag and drop from the download file, to the cd, I get a message:

The file sp42470(my driver .exe) has extra information attached to it that might be lost if you continue copying. The contents of this file will not be affected. Do you want to copy the file anyway.

Now I am gonna do it anyway, but when I tried with my graphics drivers last night, it went to 99% and just hung there, causing a no response on my entire system, then said it could not complete.

Dragged and dropped the enthernet ones, and it worked. I started my FIOS conenction wizard and I am downloading firefox.

Thank you guys a ton. Now I need to hunt down those three other drivers.

I can't express my gratitude. thank you.

Okay. I have it all working...

No more out of date drivers I am aware of. (The network controller one was my Wireless card, which I am removing anyway).

My last problem is now this...

Adobe Flash works in IE. Sound and movie. But then it doesn't, and says I need Flash.

It won't work in Firefox, no matter how many times I uninstall or install. Such as, going to Youtube, it says I need flash.

But when I go to Adobe's site, it shows Shockwave and Flash both working.

I can now get sound and video from IE7.

Firefox just won't play Flash...
