Modem/Router problems. Tech help? (was forum=28)Follow

#1 Feb 16 2009 at 7:41 AM Rating: Decent
I was wondering if any one here could help me with this problem.

As of last night, our modem decided to stop sending info to the router. We can still get internet plugging directly into the modem. We've also been having sporadic disconnects by the modem a lot in the past week or so, this is why I think it's the modem dying and not the router. Also because we've tried 2 routers and neither are working.

We have a dlink604E and a Blitzz BWA721, and our modem is a Motorola SB5102.

I've logged onto the dlink and checked to see if there was firmware to update, I've ran cable checks, updates and whatnot, and as far as I can tell, the router is working fine. Also various stages of plugged and unplugged o_O...

I'm basically looking for a conformation that it's my modem and not the routers. If anyone could help me with this I'd be extremely grateful.

Buy a new modem and see if it works? Or borrow one from a friend?

I hope you didn't actually follow my advice...

It was such an outrageous recommendation, only Tailmon would follow it.

Was your router manufactured in Canada?

You need to get yourself a crossover cable.

It's almost absolutely not your modem.

Good luck.

Pin reset it. That is, physically reset it. Find the physical switch on it, either a button or a recessed button you'll need to press with a needle (or some small object), unplug it for five minutes. Really, five minutes, not ten seconds, depress the button, plug it back in, continue to hold the button depresseed for a minute or so and reset it to default.

As for the random disconnects call your internet provided and have them check the lines. When that happened to me it turned out that part of the outdoor connectors hadn't been upgraded for 10 years and the wiring itself was partially chewed through.
