And by rebuild, I mean replace every single part one at a time. First up comes the Power Supply so that I can turn it on and hope that the hard drives still work so I can get anything of importance off of it.

The only problem right now is that the front panel of the computer is missing and there is no power button. Is there any way that I could still turn it on after hooking up the "new"(it's old but it works, a co-worker lent it to me) power supply and plugging it in?

I know absolutely nothing about computer hardware and how the inside of a computer works. The point here is to teach myself using guides and by asking people questions.

Its possible, you could create yourself a new ON switch by having 2 wires correctly connect to your MB's power connectors and short them out when needed or wire them throuugh some sort of button.

If the power connector wires are still there and your front panel is missing, shorting the wire (but preferably going through a small one push button) would allow it to turn on.

Something like this: http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2062508&cp=&sr=1&origkw=switches&kw=switches&parentPage=search (seriously 3$)

All it need is a 1 second short and your comp is on.

There's no particular reason to do this until you have the new case.

Smash is correct. Also I would recommend having someone who knows what they are doing help you.
