I tried turning on my computer today and I was faced with this error: Disk read error, press ctrl-alt-del to restart.

I inserted my xp boot disk and ran chkdsk /r, at 50% it tells me 'The volume appears to contain one or more unrecoverable problems'.

Does that mean that my hard disk is officially dead?

I'd suggest putting the drive in another computer and seeing what happens, but that might not be a choice you have. If you can get another drive or something to boot from, I'd probably start backing things up either way.

Also, just to make sure it's not a connection issue, make sure the cables to your hard drive are all secure and that the drive is being recognized in the CMOS. If you don't know how to get into your CMOS, read your motherboard manual. Typically it's just something like pressing DEL at the POST screen (first screen on boot).
