Spontaneous power downFollow

A week and a half ago, my computer lost all power abruptly like the power strip was turned off. (It wasn't.) It happened while I was changing areas in FFXI, if that could possibly do anything involving it. I had to replace the PSU, but it was under warranty, so that was good.

Today it did it again, and I'm wondering if it's the controller modulator I'm using. I don't know if that even makes sense at all. It powered down all of a sudden, it wouldn't turn back on, I pulled the controller modulator out, flipped the PSU switch off and back on, and it started.

I MAY have jostled the power cord loose, but I'm kinda paranoid. I'm basically asking if a USB device can cause spontaneous power down.

Playstation 2 to PC USB Gamepad Converter (ordered off amazon, from some strange Chinese manufacturer)
PSU is 420w

Yes a USB device can cause a power down if its causing problems (too high voltage or a short)

I had a USB 4 port hub that required being plugged in to work (along with USB) it worked for a while, then I unplugged it. Left it alone for a few weeks. And then as I plugged it back in it caused an instant shutdown. Rebooted without it (and unplugging it) all worked fine, then plugged it in. Poof the surge protector went off again. Unplugged everything and plugged it in another plug, same problem.

Solution: tossed the hub out.

One thing you can do is go into Control Panel>Performance and Maintenance>Administrative Tools>Event Viewer and check for errors and description under "System". Gives you a better idea of what has gone wrong

I've had the same thing happen to one of my Computers as well, but the system would just basically hang whenever the USB port was put to use

I actually did that. There are no logs of anything happening at either the PSU frying or when it just powered down. I guess windows doesn't notice it spontaneously shut down.

Upon thinking about it and reading some things, I think my onboard USB ports are trash. They've always given me problems. I tempted to try my controller in the offboard USB ports I have, but I'm still a little wary.

Thank you to both of you, by the way.
