[FFXI PC] Graphics card troubleFollow

#1 Sep 26 2008 at 5:41 PM Rating: Decent
Hi,

I have a HIS ATI Radeon 4850 256MB and when I play FFXI the game freezes every 5-60min and there are scrambled pixels on the monitor, sometimes the PC crashes completely.

First I installed the graphics driver from CD, then I uninstalled and installed the newest driver (8-9) from the ATI website - same problem.

I heard the old 5.13 driver is the best for FFXI, but when I tried to install it, I get the error message "Setup was unable to find component that can be installed on your current hardware or software configuration".
I'm not sure if I have made a proper uninstall of the newer graphics driver?

Then I tried to install the Omega Driver, because I've been told they are very compatible, but I also got the error message "Setup was unable to find component that can be installed on your current hardware or software configuration"

Trying to play FFXI without any extra drivers nets the error message "Failed to initialize Direct3D"

edit: I am using WindowsXP Home SP2

BTW I am using Direct X 9.0c all the time

I am pretty clueless now.. what can I do to run FFXI smoothly? please help!
thank you

Did you try with any other game?

If not please do (and with a semi graphic intensive game) If you got an ATI you likely got access to a few free steam games like a Half Life demo. If the same occurs in Half Life your video card may be having troubles.

Scrambled pixels and lock ups sound like an overheating issue. Is there enough airflow around the graphics card to let it cool down properly or is everything cramped?

GFX Temperature Idle 56-57C
GFX Temperature Load 70-71C (Crysis demo; 3DBenchmark) - no lockups

playing FFXI I had a constant 57-58C until I crashed after 30 min, I went from my mog house to a busy area and spammed spells to increase GFX load, but temperature and CPU load stayed low. FFXI doesn't challenge the 4850 it seems.

however I got one lockup at the desktop too, but only once in the 4 days that I have my new PC

I still think it is a driver issue- yet no driver works properly for FFXI >.<

is there a way to emulate or something? running on software mode doesn't work for FFXI unfortunately

Of your getting a lock up in windows desktop, you may want to reformat, which is generally a good idea if you just bought your computer from best buy or something since it gets rid of all the bloat crap.

I have some problems with the Catalyst 8.3 drivers. Find the 8.1 drivers and install those, it fixed my problems before my Radeon died completely a few months back.

It seems to be a problem with the graphics card in general, I get lockups in several other games too

Error Message is something like that "ATI2dvag.dll driver is in an endless loop. Shutting down system to avoid damage."

I searched all over the net for hours on end and it seems to be a common issue with ATI cards that exists for several years, but there still hasn't been a proper fix ! *omg*
There were some hints how to fix it *maybe*, but none of them helped.
Installing older Version -> oldest that does work with 8000 Series: 8.6 (with hotfix) causes even more crashes
Omega driver -> doesn't support 8000 Series yet
Clean de-install and re-install in secure Windows Mode -> doesn't work
Putting VSync to always on or always off -> doesn't work

Sounds like a good excuse to buy a new graphics card.
