FFXI - Failed to initialize Direct3DFollow

#1 Sep 20 2008 at 4:28 AM Rating: Decent
First, thanks in advance for the help. I tried reading around and trying other things posted on the forum, but nothing has worked.

When I try to load up FFXI, I get the message "Terminated as an error occurred in Final Fantasy XI. Failed to initialize Direct3D. Please check that this computer has the required specifications to run Final Fantasy XI.(-1)"

I recently reformatted my computer and had to reinstall everything. I have the most recent version of DirectX installed and my video card NVIDIA GeForce FX 5200 is installed and updated. I tried talking to FFXI tech support about this and they said it might be a problem with the video card.

Everything worked fine before I reformatted my computer. Also, the sound is not working for anything on my computer.

Again, thanks for the help.

Install the sound driver for your motherboad / sound card. You shuld have a CD/DVD containing all the drivers that are required for your motherboard.

If you dont have them, take off the side panel and find out what your motherboard model is then find those drivers.

As for your video card, did you try with another game?

Post back once you have done the above.

I put in the CD that has all of the drivers. The driver for the GeForce 5200 was already installed. The only sound driver on the CD was not installed. When trying to install the driver, I unzipped the files and then a link opened and had a button that said "install now". I clicked on the button, saved the file setup.exe and then tried to open it up. Upon opening it I immediately get the message "Error installing iKernel.exe: (0x10000)" and the setup process is stopped.

As for the Direct3D... I installed Company of Heroes which requires DirectX 9.0c to play. I was able to play the game, but it ran really slow or laggy, but it did play. The slow play may be due to my 4 year old computer.
