I had this problem at the begining of the month but it went away (I don't know if my brothers or my dad looked at it or not) and now it's back again.

I get DC'ed every 5 to 20 mins and I'd like some help

I just resubscribed to FFXI and man, this problem is annoying. I lose connection to POL every 5-20 minutes just like the poster above. That made the initial FFXI update such fun :|

Info about my setup:

Vista x64 edition (ethernet, IPv6 disabled)
10mb/s cable connection
Ethernet router, forwarding the ports listed here: https://secure.playonline.com/supportus/index.html
I'm using OpenDNS : www.opendns.com

No problems with any other apps or machines, and average ping time to www.playonline.com is 28ms, 0% loss over 300 pings

No software firewall, other than the windows firewall (which I am currently testing).

UPDATE: k, FFXI doesn't appear to have its own executable, wierd O.o I've set the windows firewall to allow any and all inbound and outbound connections for pol.exe and all the polboot.exes, we'll see how that goes.

UPDATE 2: No dice, I get FFXI-4002 then POL-0512. /Googles

I have similar problems and have for a while. I have two computers at my apartment where my roommate plays FFXI on one and I play on the other. We both used to experience error code 4001 and/or 4002 frequently. I tried portforwarding (just one computer, obviously), but we would both still disconnect. So then I set my computer on DMZ (which I know is potentially dangerous) and that caused my computer to stop disconnecting. My roommate's computer still disconnects, however.

I wish I knew how to allow my roommate's computer to not disconnect as well, since only one computer can be set as DMZ.

I've googled 'til the cows come home but have yet to find a means of fixing this once and for all without the use of DMZ.

Just an update.

I now have a new Netgear router, with only the UPD ports forwarded and it's working fine. My old router used to work properly with FFXI as well, so either some part of Windows Vista was the cause, or FFXI's network behaviour changed during my time away.

Just an update that I resolved my issue by purchasing and setting up a new router. I no longer receive Error codes FFXI-4001 or 4002. My faulty router seemed to intermittently lose connectivity every every 20-30 minutes, however it wouldn't always disconnect me from the game when I had a DMZ on. Still annoying even without disconnections. The new router does not have this problem and I can stay logged in without problems.

If anyone is interested in the routers I'm talking about in this case:

The faulty router was a Belkin with model number F5D9230-4. Google searching this router brought up a lot of complaints of the same connectivity issues I had. I wish I had researched it more before purchasing. The new router I purchased which has no problems is a Linksys (by Cisco) with model number WRT54G2.
