I don't think it has worked since I've bought the laptop, so I may have to bring it back to the store. In Device Manager I get an error sign over it and the message

Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)

Click 'Check for solutions' to send data about this device to Microsoft and to see if there is a solution available.

But none of the available solution / help things have given me any luck.

Does anyone know why it might not be working? Can you get a new driver or it part of the hardware?

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/927524

says it can be installed if I use the .inf file, but there doesn't seem to be one.

DVD drives, along with CD drives don't need specific drivers under Windows XP or Windows Vista. They just use the built in ones. What could be going on here, especially if it's a toshiba laptop, is that you have some power save software ont he laptop that adjusts the level your DVD drive spins. if it is corrupted it might be preventing the drive from loading.

Unfortunatly, thats likely a rare scenario.

What is more common is a failed or bad out of the box DVD drive. If that is the case, it's not ever going to work and you will need a new one. Especially if it didn't work when you took it out of the box, this is the most likely scenario unfortunatly. Make sure you take it abck as soon as possible. Out of warrenty replacement on those drives starts at $150 for the part alone.
