Network slow downFollow

A little background first.

Internet connection: Cable (Time Warner Road Runner)
Router: Linksys WRT54G

Issue: When downloading larger files, say my laptop updating World of Warcraft, all other PC connectivity slows down tremendously. My main PC, which is connected via a wired connection, slows to a crawl to load web pages while the laptop is downloading. Also, if I were to be downloading a torrent of the latest version of Ubuntu on my PC, any other attempts to surf while the download is happening is slow as well.

Is this an issue at the router, or my connection? I would hope my connection would be fast enough to handle downloading some files while surfing the internet. Are there steps I can take to pinpoint where the bottleneck is?

Connection, probably. It's possible you're overloading some tables on your router. Try cycling it by unplugging it for a few seconds next time you see the problem. Most likely, though, you're just saturating a shared asymmetric upload speed that's too small.

I feel your pain, though, sometimes when my fiber connection gets saturated at 4MB/sec I have to throttle things back.

It seems worse than usual, I never used to have this problem before. I was wondering if it was because Time Warner decided to offer a faster cable connection and so limited those of us with what was previously the fastest connection they had.

If resetting your router doesnt fix it. You could call your ISP and see if they did cap you. Comcast was doing some stupid crap a few months ago where they would cap your bandwidth if you went over x amount or if you used x amount in a day.

I'd suggest putting DD-WRT firmware on your router. It has some really nice QoS stuff on there, you can set your main PC to have the highest priority on connections.

Even if it Time Warner being weird or your router needs to be reset, DD-WRT is much better than Linksys' firmware.

I converted another router I had to that firmware but I've been having issues with it so I didn't want to mess with my "factory" router. Maybe I'll hook up the DD-WRT router this weekend and see if I can get a better connection from it.
