No sound after install and driver updateFollow

That's the short story. Here's the long story:

I reformatted my system and installed everything fresh. The only problem I'm having is that I'm no longer getting any sound from my speakers (USB headset works fine). I've properly inserted the sound card and installed the latest drivers from the manufacturer's website, but I still get no sound from my speakers.

Here's the weird part. After I rebooted to finish up the driver installation process, I started to get the Windows start-up music. A window popped up (very briefly) halfway through the music saying something about finalizing the process. As soon as it disappeared, the start-up music stopped. I went into the device manager and it looks fine. No yellow question marks or exclamation points. I went to Sounds and Audio Devices in the control panel. Everything is set according to how I always have them. Speakers are connected (I never disconnected them), volume is turned up, nothing is muted. The speakers are digital, digital settings are turned on.

I'm not sure what else there is to do. Any ideas?

Ok, I tried a cleansweep and reinstallation of the card and its drivers. All the messages had sound during the driver installation process. I had sound when the system went down for reboot. I heard the startup music, start to finish. Shortly after that I got a message saying, "Completing installation of your audio card."

After it disappeared, I opened up Windows Media Player to test the sound and got nothing. I rechecked the volume controls and device manager... everything appeared to be normal.

What exactly happens during that installation completion message? Because prior to that, everything works the way it's supposed to.

Registry edits mainly. This is like the 80's, but open device manager see if there's some sort of conflict with other hardware/left over drives.

Did you try to uncheck the digital option? I know of incompatibility issues with digital output settings. Give that a try, as I suspect it has something to do with the digital settings.
